Matt Grey[edit]

Why does that anonymous user keep adding Matt Grey to the Cardiff squad list? Grey's article says he was only ever a reserve team player; OK, he made the first-team as a substitute in a couple of friendlies, but I doubt that he was actually part of the first-team on a regular basis unlike the rest of the players. – PeeJay 10:40, 4 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No sources I can find have any mention of him ever playing for Cardiff in a first-team fixture, so I'm assuming it might just be him or someone who know's him that just wants to have an article on him. Kosack (talk) 10:51, 4 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have added him a couple of times, he played a few Games for Cardiff City, I watched him mainly in reserves he was only about 16 at the time on YTS, he did make a couple of first team appearances as a sub and came on and scored against Aldershot with his head , I have a program with him in. I think he ended up heading to London to play but ended up injured. Charlton or somewhere like that. If you want a copy of the program I can email it. It is Gray with an A not an E. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.18.135.180 (talk) 20:00, 4 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There was 2 Matts at or around that time Matty Holmes and Matt Gray (Apprentice) If I remember Holmes didn't stay for long.

I've checked every source I can:
  • Soccerbase
  • Dean Hayes' Who's Who of Cardiff City
  • Neil Brown's stats website
  • He was also not listed on allfootballers.com when the site was still operational

There's also no mention of him playing for any London based club in those sources. The only mention of a Matt Gray at Cardiff refers to him as being released in 2001 HERE. That can't be the same one as if he was with the club for 11 years then he would have made appearances numbered well into the hundreds. Does the programme you have clearly state that he made a first team appearance and, if so, what competition? Kosack (talk) 20:23, 4 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There was an article on here about him some months ago, being a proud Cardiff Fan and steward for over 40 years I have seen many players come ago, some of them not listed on any sites. In the case of Gray he was at the time in Articles such as the Gwent Gazette, South Wales Argus stating he was the new bright talent to come out of the Valleys , I think you could probably find some articles in archive if you wanted to look. A quick search on the net might not show too much about this player. The program is a pre season game v Aldershot listing Gray as No4 with a small Article about youth player makes first team. Never a regular First team player but what Id call a fringe player. He did appear back and forth at the bluebirds I thought it was 1999 when he started training with the first team again. One of the lads from the club knows his father who was a very accomplished goalkeeper. I heard that he had connections with Steve Kember (ex palace, chelsea) and went on trial at i think palace but then followed Kember to Whyteleaf which i think was Ryman league. Again another source suggests he ended up in Thailand for a few years as a player coach at Chaiyaphum utd and has now returned to uk and is a scout and Coach. Hes also mentioned in a program v Swindon town. Hopefully this helps inform you, conclusion being never a big name but a mention is justified, Possibly an idea to put a subs/reserve section like on other teams as some of the players listed over a period of time were considered fringe rather than regular. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.18.135.180 (talk) 20:55, 4 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The article was deleted as he failed the notability guidelines at WP:ATHLETE if I remember correctly which means that he did not make an appearance in a fully professional competition. It also means that any other editors who checked the article following it's deletion nomination were also unable to find any proof of him playing a professional game. Also, none of the other information seems to qualify him as being noteworthy.

If it was verifiable that he made just one appearance for the first team I'd be more than happy for him to be included but if we were to include every player who was associated with the club in any way during a season the list would be ridiculously long. Like I said before, unless the programme you own clearly states he made a first team appearance in a competitive fixture or you are able to provide a different reliable source along the same lines then he shouldn't be listed here. Can you provide a reliable source? Kosack (talk) 21:19, 4 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Kosack if you would like me to email you the copy of the program , then no problem. I have just stated he was at the club and played for the first team in at least two games that im aware of. The Swindon game being a cup game. You cant get much more accurate that a long serving club steward. Thats the problem with this site you have two many people dismissing factual info because its 'not on the net'. Instead of dismissing it research the issue correctly, without google. It really doesnt mean too much if you delete him, i was just trying to be helpful by adding something to the page. You said yourself you found him released in 2001, which is feasible as he was there in 1999.

The reason information not based on verifiable sources is dismissed on Wikipedia is because there's no way to verify the information if someone comes on and states random facts. Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Cardiff programmes previously include a team list for all previous matches played during the season? If you have a programme that does list him as playing in either the Swindon cup match or the other game you mentioned I'll gladly take a look at it. However, the programme for the actual Swindon game would be useless as it is published prior to the game meaning it still wouldn't confirm he actually played in the game. Kosack (talk) 22:01, 4 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Back in those days a player who is allocated a number 4 on his jersey is a player that generally starts, he came on as a sub for some reason in the first half. Unfortunately i cannot give you a video recording from MOTD as it was division 4 game and wouldnt be on MOTD. I have all programs for that season so 'I should be able to dig out a match report for the swindon game from a league game program. Can I upload the image and get it to you on wikipedia. This seems like its got into a personal battle which I really didnt want as like I said before is not really my thing. Have you verified all other squad names in the other seasons as there are few players listed that have the same notability as Gray and have been listed without discussion. Nothing personal as Im sure editing takes up alot of your time. Its a little late to be going in the loft so I will dig through over the next few days. Regards. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.18.135.180 (talk) 22:21, 4 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A match report would be perfect as long as it mentions him playing. If you find a suitable source send me a message on my talk page and I'll give you an e-mail address to send it to. As for the other players, I have sources regarding all of the ones listed here as having played in at least one professional match at some point during their City career.
This isn't meant to be a personal battle, I'm only sticking to the guidelines laid out by Wikipedia. Like I said before, I'd be more than happy to include him if he made a first team appearance. Cheers. Kosack (talk) 22:36, 4 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

He was a cracking centre half at youth level. Did play first team too. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.27.228.39 (talk) 09:13, 5 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
