Need a ref[edit]

"Pomeroy increased his margin over his opposition for the third year in a row since 2002. This was due to the fact that Mechtel was not known well throughout the state, and that the Republican Party itself was beginning to slump."

Can we say definitively that the fact that Mechtel wasn't well known and that the party was struggling is what led to Pomeroy increasing his margin? I'm not saying that this isn't the case and that those aren't the reasons. It just sounds like something that needs a ref.
