Quality rating[edit]

I am re-rating this as Start class because I don't feel "Future" is an adequate quality rating. If I were to go through a list of articles and the quality rating next to it, Future would tell me nothing of the quality of the article. This article is in the beginning stages of development, and with the start of the season less than two weeks away, I believe that qualifies are no longer being in the future as many things pertaining to the college football season have begun such as the release of ratings, practices, and frequent commentary. If another editor feels differently, please state your opinion here. All in all, this isn't an important aspect in the development of this article.↔NMajdantalk 21:16, 24 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This type of article is precisely the reason that Future-class and Current-class exist. For one thing, it says "Don't bother assessing this yet", preventing editors from wasting their time assessing an article that is going to significantly change soon, either as the event approaches (for Future-class) or as the event progresses (for Current-class). When the season has finished, and/or the pertinent information from that season has been incorporated into the article, they can be flagged for reassessment. Until then these season articles will be subject to rapid change, making regular assessment unreliable.

The notion of the "quality" of the article is fairly meaningless right now. Pretty soon, the content of the article is going to change significantly every week. Once things stabilize (games are no longer being played, awards have been given out), it can be assigned a meaningful quality rating. Until then, trying to determine how comprehensively the article treats the subject is going to be in a state of near-constant flux.

Fair enough. Let's rate it as "Current-class" to reflect the ongoing nature of the event. In fact, I'd agree that all the articles about this season can be re-rated as "Current", as depth charts, game times, TV coverage, and rankings are all getting firmed up.
  • All in all, this isn't an important aspect in the development of this article.
Correct. Quality ratings in general have little to do with the development of the article. It's only used for behind-the-scenes work, usually involving the various projects, including WP:1.0.
Here are a couple more pages describing the usage of Future- and Current-Class. The first one is from the college football wikiproject assessment page, the second is from the WP 1.0 editorial team assessment page.
That's my take on this. The use of Future-Class (and to a lesser extent, Current-Class) is fairly well established on Wikipedia. Take a look at WP:FILM for a good example. Specifically, Wikipedia:WikiProject Films/Future films and Wikipedia:WikiProject Films/Assessment. As you stated, many things related to the season have begun, like TV coverage, rankings, etc, so I'll grant that Future-Class is no longer merited. However, this just puts it into Current-Class to reflect the ongoing change in the topic. I'll get started rolling all the current season articles over.
