Non-notable candidates[edit]

I just pared more than half of the list as individuals without noted importance. Only one had a position of any kind listed, aside from the entry I was removing due to conflict of interest. Does anyone think they should be included? Tell me here. – Muboshgu (talk) 14:09, 4 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes absolutely I think they should be included. Although, with over 38 candidates in the field right now, it may be sufficient to mention the link where candidates can be located on the official San Francisco Elections Site. Also in August the actual candidates that will be on the ballot will be shown, and then at that point it will be a more complete list. Xacobi (talk) 10:55, 2 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Um, I added a bunch of them back - without looking here first. All the candidates I added are listed in a PDF/publication sent out by sfgov.org last updated 6/27/11. I added a reference to the document as well. By the way, I also added a fairly significant candidate, John Avalos. I would chastise you for that, but I make the same mistake of not checking talk pages often enough. I'm surprised Avalos wasn't on the page, that was an oversight I'm glad you corrected. As for the rest, there is a general rule of thumb to not include candidates unless they are notable enough to have their own page. – Muboshgu (talk) 13:26, 12 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I don't recall such a rule. We regularly include candidates who have no article themselves in articles about elections. The article currently presents a selection of candidates - you chose those with articles - and that should be made clear. Otherwise I think a selection should be based on a reliable source that excludes those that don't merit inclusion (perennial candidates, joke candidates, candidates who don't campaign, etc.). Party labels should be removed[edit]

The California Constitution requires all county and municipal offices, and elections therefor, to be non-partisan. While the party labels for each candidate may be more or less accurate, they are NOT part of the election process. All candidates in the San Francisco mayoral race, as in all California municipal and county races, are officially non-partisan.

That, among other things, enables the San Francisco Republican Party to endorse a Democrat for the office of Mayor, City Attorney, Sheriff, etc. - which they always do, because they know a Republican will never win.

The other oddity in San Francisco is that, because "Republican" is a dirty word in this city, most Republicans in San Francisco register to vote as Democrats, and some even run for office as Democrats - and win.

I put a note above the results box, copied from the 2007 election page, which states that the election is non-partisan, but that various candidates are affiliated with parties and receive support from them. While it is important to note that it is nominally a non-partisan election, I think that party affiliations are important to note. – Muboshgu (talk) 18:04, 7 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
