Seeding groups[edit]

I deleted them because there's no official info. Sure, the groups can be found on Football-Rankings.Info, but that's not an official CAF website.--Edgar (talk) 09:16, 29 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Nigeria ban[edit]

It is a grand mistake to remove Nigeria from the table of the competition, the country's president says in no way interferes with the football federation of Nigeria, is independent, he has no power to revoke the selection of the country.

Fifa, who actively discourage government intervention in national associations, issued a response, saying: "We have no official information on this matter. However, in general, Fifa's position regarding political interference in football is well known." —Preceding unsigned comment added by 187.58.15.207 (talk) 15:46, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

ERemoving it is correct, as the licence of the Football Assocation was cancelled and thus is does not exist anymore. However, the presidetn hast time until tomorrow to revolve the problem - which he will not do! -- 10:28, 4 July 2010 (UTC)

2012 and 2013[edit]

It might be right (according to e.g. BBC) that there is a combined qualification for 2012 and 2013 - but how do than the two host nations of 2012 have a chance to participate in 2013 (as they are not in any group)? -- Chtrede (talk) 10:28, 4 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No more qualifying combined[edit]

I read in a newspaper that there will be no more a qualification combined for CAN 2012 & 2013, to qualify for CAN 2013 will be played between March 2012 and December 2012, the definition of the groups will be in February 2012. So says also the German Wikipedia..--Daniel Dalence (talk) 22:09, 5 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You are right - the title of the article should be changed. See Goal.com Edgar (talk) 10:50, 2 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Is Rabaah Saadane the new chairman of the CAF?[edit]

So Rabah Saadane told the BBC? he isn't a CAF official? is he? he isn't even a national coach anymore?

That's how it is gonna be: The 47 (46+Togo) nations who are participated in 2012 ACN are going to be the same to participate in a QUALIFYING ROUND for ACN 2013 with one nation exception that is of course and for sure is L I B Y A!! That is 47-1=46 Nations Teams, 46 Teams Divided into 11 Groups, 9 groups with 4 teams each that is 4*9=36, PLUS 2 groups with 5 teams each that is 5*2=10, 36+10=46, we are safe from the 4 teams groups, only the champion of the group will qualify for the 2013 ACN, that's 9*1=9, and the Group champion PLUS the runner up from the 2 groups containing 5 teams each, that's 2*2=4, 9+4=13, the last two teams to qualify for the 2013 ACN are the best two runners up from the 9 groups containing 4 teams each, that's 2, 13+2=15, thank you Jesus, Timing between 01 March and 30 November 2012, that's MARCH+APRIL+MAY+JUN+JULY+AUGUST+SEPTEMBER+OCTOBER+NOVEMBER, 9 Months, with one month between the end of the first cup in 31 January 2012, and a month before the start of the next one in 10 January 2013, this should be definitely more than enough for the professionals to REST. Seeding will be sometime in February 2012, it is gonna be 29 days long, this should be enough too! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 41.131.125.122 (talk) 16:43, 11 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move[edit]

2012 and 2013 Africa Cup of Nations qualification2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualification — The article is only about the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualification. There is a seperate article for the 2013 qualification. Moving the talk page would also make it match up with the article title. Crazydude22 (talk) 18:39, 10 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

note - looks like it's only the talk page that needs moving (merging?)--Kotniski (talk) 06:55, 18 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Middle East and North Africa protests interfering with fixtures?[edit]

Just curious, and probably off-topic, but is it possible that Libya's next game (which is in Tripoli) could be played in a neutral venue because of the current situation in the country? Maybe riots will cool down after Gaddafhi is gone, but I seriously doubt Gaddafhi will give up without a fight. 99.64.137.227 (talk) 23:02, 2 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Namibia eliminated with a defeat?[edit]

Wouldn't Namibia be mathematically eliminated if they lose their next game against Burkina Faso? They'll still have 0 point with a last game to play against Gambia, giving them the chance to still be able to finish 2nd with 3 pts. But as only the top 2 runners-up qualify for the finals, would they still have a chance to be amoung them with only 3 pts? I doubt a lot but it sounds interesting to know. Schnapper (talk) 16:15, 12 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No, because those "runner-up" teams from other groups may change to teams with a lower adjusted scores.Jlsa (talk) 20:44, 12 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Incomplete scenarios[edit]

While the scenarios for 2-4 September are largely correct, they do not reflect the possibilities of teams being eliminated because they can only finish second, but not in the best two runners-up in the adjusted scenarios.

The first example is Mali, who will be eliminated if they lose and Zimbabwe win (or, slightly less likely, if Zimbabwe draw). In that case their best result would be 2nd in the group, but with 3 adjusted points (4 with the draw). All other groups could end the round with no team able to finish 2nd with fewer than 4 adjusted points, and with 5 other groups (3, 4, 6, 7 and 9) with fewer than 5 adjusted points. A number of other possibilities exist. I am not sure whether it would be sufficient to note the possibility (eg, "Mali could possibly be eliminated if ..." etc) or if we should do (as in the 2010 UEFA WCQuals) a list of what needs to happen (eg, "and if two of the following things happen ...") which would be really repetitive. A quick scan of the outcomes suggests that Mali, Nigeria, Libya, Morocco, Central African Republic, Congo DR, Sierra Leone, Niger and Angola could be affected by this - and that is just teams that cannot otherwise be eliminated. Jlsa (talk) 01:37, 10 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I've created a file which contains each possible remaining scenario for each group and indicates for each one the runners-up and their adjusted points. Hope this helps: http://nocta.li/caf.xls Schnapper (talk) 12:05, 18 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
File updated. Elimination scenarios for Namibia done. Schnapper (talk) 17:19, 23 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Take a look at my recent changes. I made notes in every group how teams "may" either clinch or be out "depending on results in other groups." My thought was to save the space it would take to list all the exact scenarios multiple times. At least this way, we acknowledge the possibility and note which teams could be affected. In Group F, I left the specifics on how Burkina Faso can clinch, just because it was fairly short and they're the only team who have already secured a minimum 9 points in the 2nd place team rankings. My working notes are here. LarryJeff (talk) 17:20, 1 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You should have read wikipedia![edit]

South Africa celebrated at the end of the match that finished 0-0, but if they had read wikipedia (and specifically LarryJeff's excellent work on this page and here) they would have known it wasn't enough. Jlsa (talk) 03:40, 9 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It would be very "ironic" if they were playing for the draw by thinking they would qualify thanks to the Egyptian victory, indeed. Schnapper (talk) 09:35, 9 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Some of the reports in the Saffa press suggest at least one player was time wasting for a draw near the end. Jlsa (talk) 15:27, 9 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It's very interesting that sports could be depend on wikipedia.... --Sayka41 (talk) 15:11, 10 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Not only did they think a draw would suffice, they still challenge the CAF rules; they officially filled a complaint asserting that they finished top of group G and that the CAF is wrong! [1] [2] Tachfin (talk) 22:23, 10 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
As stupid as SAFA was, and the protest is likely to be tossed out, should the protest be noted? The Burkina Faso probe is still undreway, and is noted. Crazydude22 (talk) 08:34, 12 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It would seem reasonable to add that point - even if it seems a ridiculous complaint it would certainly rank as "noteworthy" given the number of hits it gets on google. Jlsa (talk) 10:35, 12 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Added Crazydude22 (talk) 12:18, 12 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It didn't depend on wikipedia. That would be crazy, as the information might be false at any given time. SAFA is to blame to not have read the regulations. Couldn't be clearer and its the same way in any major competition. -Koppapa (talk) 12:18, 12 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
