Start date[edit]

Why is the first day of preseason the first day of the 2014-15 transactions? Shouldn't it be as soon as the playoffs are over? Thricecube 18:15, 27 June 2014 (UTC)

I agree. For each NHL team, their season ends when they have played their final regular season game and have been eliminated from the playoffs. The NHL season officially ends when the Stanley Cup is awarded. All transactions made following the end of the season are logically made in preparation for the upcoming season, and to record transactions made in preparation for the new season with the previous season's article does not follow common sense. Officially, the NHL season ends and starts July 1, for the sake of transactions of palyer rights - which is what this page is interested in. That is the day of turnover for all old contracts and the start of new ones. These pages have been built to start on the draft day. There are arguments as to why this was chosen, and why it is a good day to start, however the main reason we do not move to a new format is because it would be inconsistent with every previous season's transaction page (there was a debate about this last year where I felt we should start it July 1, but it eventually came down to starting July 1 for the new pages would mean we'd have to change all the old pages to compliment that, and that is a very large task) -Uncleben85 (talk) 21:32, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Previous Team: Arizona Coyotes[edit]

Shouldn't we still be using Phoenix Coyotes for the "Previous Team" column in free agent signings? After all, that's the name they last played for. Cppallot (talk) 00:41, 9 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I think the way we have been approaching the situation is that Arizona officially changed their name at the start of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. All of the transactions listed on this page take place after the beginning of the Entry Draft, so any player involved in a transaction whose previous team was the Coyotes - although they never played in a game as an Arizona Coyote - is transferring from the Arizona Coyotes to their new team. Another reason to do this is to just avoid the confusion of having Phoenix Coyotes and Arizona Coyotes being listed on the same page without having to include a transfer list of every Phoenix Coyote player becoming an Arizona Coyote. -Uncleben85 (talk) 05:20, 17 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It is the same team; only the name has changed, so no players have been transfered from the Phoenix Coyotes to the Arizona Coyotes. As for players who do change teams - the Coyotes officially changed their name on June 27, 2014, so all transfers before that date are to/from the Phoenix Coyotes, and all transfers on and after that date are to/from the Arizona Coyotes. Do we really want to include references on every single transaction? That is a lot of 1) work to go in and add those, 2) bytes we're adding to the page. Each transaction is quite easy to access via a websearch as well. Reliable sources are to be included using inline citations pursuant to the Wiki-policies of WP:BLP and WP:Verifiability. Poor past editing practice is no excuse to not do it properly now. Dolovis (talk) 03:55, 18 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

You could do a general reference which is done on some of the last seasons and is done on many featured lists. General references are good in that they cut down on the number of inline references which when over used can be a detriment to an article. -DJSasso (talk) 21:46, 24 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This is what I was thinking. Too many certainly can be detrimental, especially when a general reference could suffice. @Dolovis, I do agree that poor past practices is not a good excuse, I was curious however if it truly was poor past practices, or if in the past a decision had been made to not include individual references. -Uncleben85 (talk) 22:31, 6 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I would be okay with this formatting. Also, I went through and added a reference for every transaction up until this point and where possible, made sure to use an official team news release, and used nhl.com sources as a back-up and non-NHL sources as a last resort. However, once I got to the trades, it dawned on me, there are two teams involved, which press release do I use? For now I used the team on the left - the team (subjectively) getting the largest return or more prominent player. Should I/we switch to using official nhl.com press releases where possible to offer a more neutral reference, and only use team releases where needed, and non-NHL sources as a last resort? -Uncleben85 (talk) 15:55, 23 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Generally I use NHL references before team references, but using sources such as TSN and ESPN are usually acceptable as well. In extreme circumstances I will even go as far as using a team's beat writer as a source, though I generally try to avoid doing this whenever possible. Cleaning up references to better match Cite web template. Adding authors where applicable. Citing website name, as done in the first example on the aforementioned page. Including very important publish date. Not including accessdate, as "Not required for web pages or linked documents that do not change; mainly for use of web pages that change frequently or have no publication date."; these are mostly dedicated news articles that go unedited. If an updating transaction page is to be cited, accessdate is being included. Date style is YYYY-MM-DD as per acceptable date formats. Removed unnecessary ref names as that is usually reserved for multiple use of the same inline citation or footnotes. Clean up not yet complete. -Uncleben85 (talk) 04:49, 5 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Daniel Alfredsson[edit]

Before retiring, Daniel Alfredsson signed a one-day contract with the Ottawa Senators so that he could officially retire as an Ottawa Senator. Should we structure our page to reflect that? The contract does not allow him to play a game, but it does allow him to partake in the pre-game warmup and ceremonies and have the Senators listed as his last team. For now, I've treated it as purely ceremonial, and have him retired as a Red Wing, but it wouldn't be difficult to add him to the free agents list, and change his retirement team. -Uncleben85 (talk) 20:41, 4 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
