Notability[edit]

Not sure if the event itself is notable enough to warrant a standalone article. While it was certainly newsworthy at the time, I haven't seen indication that it has born long-term significance other than being recognised as one of Netiwit's many protests. The current article title is also really clunky, probably an indication that the event wasn't significant enough to have received a recognisable name. If no significant developments follow, I think it should be considered for merging into the article on Netiwit himself. --Paul_012 (talk) 08:29, 10 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I would say this incident is highly notable and at the very heart of the current Thai political and educational systems. It received a ton of coverage in the English media, even far more in the Thai media, and has led to an ongoing national discussion. Consider that Chulalongkorn University is Thailand's most prestigious and a highly respected institution in the country. Their political decision to remove a democratically elected student council President for protesting, at a time when the country is under military rule, is indicative of the current status of freedom of expression in Thailand. It was especially a shocking event considering the recent passing of King Bhumibol Adulyadej in a nation which reveres the monarchy and strongly values face. The incident is still unresolved with a two month delay in the appeal process, likely because of its strongly political nature. -- — Preceding unsigned comment added by 115.87.121.223 (talk)

Thailand doesn't really come up with original names for events here either. For example, the Thammasat University massacre is called "the 6th October event" when translated into Thai. I think this event is notable. It's unresolved, but I think whichever way the appeal is eventually decided, it's going to set a precedent and cause an uproar. I agree with Paul's opinion that the event may not be notable enough as a standalone article, and should be merged with another article. The event has, more or less, lost momentum and is not widely referred to within the country. No significant developments have since followed. On a side note, the article in its current form also does not provide much 'diversity' in the references provided, and barely tells us anything about the other seven students. I believe this incident is notable. It's referred to widely within Thailand. Seven Nobel prize winners issued a statement on this topic a few days ago, so it certainly hasn't lost momentum. 203.144.92.32 (talk) 09:17, 20 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Chulalongkorn University incident on 3 August 2017Chulalongkorn University incident – I recently moved this article to its shorter title, Chulalongkorn University incident, per WP:CONCISE, but was reverted per WP:PRECISE. However, there seems to be no need for this level of precision. I usually work on political or current events, and it seems that it is within naming conventions to provide the year. For instance, see 2014 Kaohsiung gas explosions or 2014 Taipei Metro attack. On the other hand, see 2015 Ma–Xi meeting, which was moved to omit the year, after I had created the article. I hold no strong opinions on whether this article should include the year, but I think the full date is far too exact. Additionally, I edited the lede to remove the article's title, as it does not seem a WP:COMMONNAME, unlike February 28 Incident. Vycl1994 (talk) 15:19, 15 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • At least use 2017 Chulalongkorn University incident. I agree with your removal of the inappropriate bold opening, and that the current title isn't good. But "Chulalongkorn University incident" implicitly overstates the notability of this event, which I questioned above, and still do. There are surely numerous more notable incidents in the university's history that a plain "incident" title would be thought to refer to (off the top of my head there's the 1953 attack on Chit Phumisak). --Paul_012 (talk) 17:13, 15 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
