Merger proposal[edit]

I support merging this page with 2019 Brecon and Radnorshire recall petition and renaming it as 2019 Brecon and Radnorshire recall petition and by-election. This would also be the format for Peterborough, and any recall petition from hereon that result in by-elections. This avoids duplication of discussions on background and consequences for a process that follows one after the other. –Iveagh Gardens (talk) 10:23, 22 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose - these are distinct electoral processes and should be discussed separately. The two processes are independently notable and are well sourced, so I don't see teh case for a merger. Obviously it is possible for a by-election to not follow an unsuccessful petition, and also I take the view that the background of the petition differs quite a bit from the background of the by-election, which more describes the aftermath of the petition, the wider political context and choices of candidates. Just as a note, I know people are directed here, but most of this discussion is happening at Talk:2019_Brecon_and_Radnorshire_recall_petition. Bondegezou (talk) 12:48, 22 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

MP before election[edit]

The box currently states that the MP before the election is Chris Davies, but isn't it more accurate to say that the seat is vacant until the election? Thryduulf (talk) 20:55, 24 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

No. We have always used the infobox in this manner, that the "before" field is the previous MP. Bondegezou (talk) 21:48, 24 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Boris language row[edit]

I added the following to the article:

On 5 July 2019, Boris Johnson, one of two candidates in the Conservative leadership election, said there were too many places in the UK where English was not the first language. He was criticised for these comments, including in Wales by Dodds, as well as by Plaid Cymru, who referred to the Welsh-speaking community there.[1][2]

LukeSurl removed, arguing that this is not specific to the by-election. This row has attracted some RS coverage, particularly in Wales. While Johnson's comments were not made in the context of the by-election, both citations given quote Dodds and describe her as the by-election candidate (and there are further RS doing so), so the subsequent furore and Dodds' response to appear to me to have relevance to the by-election campaign. Bondegezou (talk) 10:25, 8 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • I see your point, but it feels very tangential to the by-election to me. Comments about the Welsh language pertain to all-Wales rather than Brecon and Radnorshire (and this area is one of the least Welsh-speaking areas in the country). Dodds has managed to get a comment into the current news cycle (a good move for a candidate for office); but unless there's further association with the by-election race - such as reported comments by other candidates or extended discussion in the local press I can't see its place in the article. --LukeSurl t c 10:54, 8 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Further citations for reference: Huff Po, Manchester Evening News, The Herald. Pretty much just saying the same things as previous citations given. Bondegezou (talk) 11:23, 8 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
