Is it possible that the apparent notability of this event is inflated by recentism? For comparison, the 2016 Telstra outage doesn't have its own article, and is described in two sentences on the main Telsta article. Ypna (talk) 06:45, 8 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This was a much more severe outage than the 2016 Telstra outages. They were localised or only specific services. This was ALL Optus customers, regardless of if they were landline NBN, mobile, business, literally every single customer that had an account with Optus could not access any services from any account for hours, there was infrastructure impacts like Melbourne trains, hospitals, call centres, etc.
In terms of continuing relevance, I think it's pretty obvious there's going to be a class action from businesses at the very least that would have lost millions not being able to do anything at all for hours on a business day, and political fallout on how to prevent this, or even as the SA government said, governments not using Optus in the future. This was as far as I can tell the most extensive telecommunications outage in Australian history. Almost anything that passed through AS4804 failed. POTS landlines, voice trunk lines, cross connects, private links, mobile voice and data, and fixed line broadband services. It compares to KDDI's mass outage in Japan and Rogers' outage in Canada.
