History following Second World War[edit]

From what I can tell, the 27th Battalion was re-raised after the war (probably 1948), based upon the information on the Royal South Australia Regiment article. It would be good if this could be included in this article also. It seems that the 27th Battalion probably existed again between 1948–60 and then 1960–87. In 1987 they then amalgamated with the 10th to form the 10th/27th RSAR. Can't lay my hands on any sources at the moment, though. — AustralianRupert (talk) 11:11, 19 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It couldn't have existed between 1960 and 1965 as this was the era of the Pentropic organisation. I'll check my sources (which are very limited on the CMF) and let you know what I find. Nick-D (talk) 11:41, 3 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Albert Palazzo's excellent book The Australian Army: A History of its Organisation 1901–2001 has a few mentions of the 27th Bn in the snapshot orders of battle it provides. The Battalion was active in the late 1940s as part of the 3rd Division (p. 209). In 1960 it was combined with the 43rd/48th Bn and 10th Bn to form the Pentropic 1 Royal South Australian Regiment (the 27th Battalion contributed A and B companies of the Pentropic battalion) (p.259). The battalion was not immediately re-raised after Pentropic was abandoned, with 1 RSAR remaining the only infantry battalion from SA in 1965 (p. 273). However, the battalion was back on the Orbat as 27 RSAR sometime prior to 1975 as it appears to have been merged with 10 RSAR and 43 RSAR that year (pp. 301–302). In 1991 it was part of 10/27 RSAR (p. 353) and remained in this configuration in 1999 (p. 379). Nick-D (talk) 23:39, 3 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I believe the 10th and 27th Battalions were re-formed on 1 July 1965 as part of the newly re-raised 9th Task Force, but I can't find much out there to prove this. Most of the other State-base regiments seem to have reformed battalions on this date and I have references for this, likewise I can reference the re-raising of the 9th Task Force on this date just not the battalions themselves. As I have said else where possible sources include: Ian Kuring's Redcoats to Cams, Dayton McCarthy's Once and Future Army and Palazzo's Defenders of Australia (history of 3rd Division). Also promising is an an article entitled "27th Battalion, the Royal South Australia Regiment" in The Bulletin, Volume 23, Issue 89 published by the Military Historical Society (United Kingdom) in 1972. 34th Brigade recruitment[edit]

The statement that "while many of those that had only limited service were reassigned to the battalions of the 34th Brigade being formed on Morotai Island for service as part of the British Commonwealth Occupation Force in Japan" doesn't seem to be correct. I can't see where on page 615 of The Government and the People 1942–1945 this appears - - it says that men in training camps were posted to relieve long service men in the islands, but not that there were any personnel "assigned" to 34 Bde. Yes, I believe that you are correct. Poor wording my part. I've tweaked it now (would you mind taking a look to see if your concern has been addressed?). The source for the 27th Bn's personnel volunteering for the occupation of Japan is the AWM source, while Hasluck is the ref for the long serving personnel receiving priority for discharge and for the formation of the 34th Bde.
