Beret[edit]

Regarding "Ferris Bueller" - it's apparently a 1970s beret he's wearing, from a time when armored units often wore black berets. Oh yes they did... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.123.227.130 (talk) 17:51, 1 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Rather than Armored units, those wearing black berets were members of Cavalry units, such as divisional cavalry reconnaissance squadrons; separate, corps-level armored cavalry regiments (the 2d ACR in southeastern Germany, the 11th in Fulda, and the 3d at Fort Bliss, TX); and members of the 1st Cavalry Division, configured in the post-Vietnam era as an armored division with tank battalions and mechanized infantry. Some units of the 1st Cav Div wore black berets while other wore black stetson hats. These and many other unauthorized pieces of headgear had not been approved at the DA level and this all came to an end in 1978 when the Chief of Staff of the Army banned all unusual headgear except for black berets for the ranger battalions and green for Special Forces units. A couple of years later the Airborne units, such as the 82d Abn Div and various smaller units, were able to get their maroon berets back but all of the others were gone for good.VilePig (talk)
