Move Iraq Section?[edit]

Maybe the Iraq section needs to be moved to the first section, as the Global war on terrorism is a current engagement that the 8th Cavalry has been and is currently involved in.

6th Squadron 8th Cavalry[edit]

I was reading this (Being a former member of the 6th Squadron 8th cavalry), and I noticed there is no mention of 6th Squadron, 8th Cavalry. I have added some.User:Freeyourmind775|Freeyourmind775]] (talk) 09:16, 18 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Chronological List of Actions 1866 -1891[edit]

I may delete this later. But for reference, The 8th was all over the west. I don't know when their focus switched, but they spent a lot of time involved in the Apache Wars. I a weak when it comes to tribes and bands that were west of the Apacheans, along the Colorado etc., and to the south east in Texas and up the Rio Grande.

These entries come from Chronological List of Actions, & C., with Indians from 1/1/1866 to 1/1/1891.

The 8th is actually fairly easy to follow during the early period. As the regiment formed, it was shifted from California to New Mexico and Arizona. It ended up being almost evenly split between the two locations, until it was finally concentrated in New Mexico in about 1870. Unsan (1950)[edit]

"The bitter fighting which had raged over five days stands saw many heroes and many memorable sacrifices, but it also stands for the most painful chapter in the proud history of the 1st Cavalry Division. On 6 November, the 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment ceased to exist as a unit, but died gallantly."

Mexican Expedition?[edit]

The 8th was not one of the units that Pershing took into Mexico, and the Army lineage does not credit them with participation in that campaign, either. They did serve along the border during the same timeframe, but that's about it. Pancho_Villa_Expedition doesn't list them, either. Unless anyone objects, I'm going to remove that from the 'Engagements' box or correct the link if it's determined that it should stay.Intothatdarkness (talk) 21:14, 13 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

May I refer you to my edit summary which was also, admittedly brief. I will view your reversion as a request for further information and will attempt to provide it here. The bulk of my edits were to conform to Wikipedia's Manual of Style wp:mos. In particular, see the portions on capitalization (e.g., WP:MILTERMS), dates (WP:DATERANGE), and section headings (WP:HEAD. Some of the edits were to reduce some of the non-encyclopedic wording and "peacock language" (see WP:PEACOCK). Some edits wee an attempt to add clarity to the language. And, some of the edits were to break up very long paragraphs to make it easier for the reader.

I don't have an issue with the text changes (and apologies for reverting that), but I do question removing the actual date of organization and some other information from the infobox. Other U.S. regiments (the 4th Cavalry, for example) have that level of specific information, and it seems to be standard for this type of article. I also noticed that you only removed those specific dates from this article and that of the 7th Cavalry. Is there a reason for that? I'm going to add the date back into the infobox for now. Infoboxes on wikipedia have as their purpose "to summarize key facts that appear in the article. The less information it contains, the more effectively it serves that purpose, allowing readers to identify key facts at a glance." The bodies of articles are usually the best spot for further detail. In addition, the infobox template explanation for the "date" field notes that the date is "the period (usually in years)". I've actually made similar edits to many other info boxes, by the way, so no prejudice against cav units! Ocalafla (talk) 22:23, 14 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Then you've got some trimming ahead of you, since there's a mix throughout the U.S. regiment articles. I don't care either way, honestly, but they should be consistent (and right now they're not). Intothatdarkness 22:28, 14 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
