Archipelago Division[edit]

References to the Archipelago Division on Wikipedia seem to link back to the 7th Mechanized Infantry Brigade (Greece), possibly due to links to one of the original Regiments in the formation (I can't find a reference to it). The history of the old division and its "link" to the 98 ADTE may not have any military continuity, but for now I've included in this article because Hellenic Army magazine publications seem to link the two (this one from "Stratos ke Enimerosi", April-June 2016, Vol.40, Pg.30. The Archipelago Division, like all the Venizelist-raised and -named formations of WWI, were renamed into regularly numbered divisions after November 1920. The division became the 7th Infantry Division, which, unless I am mistaken, became the 7th Brigade post-Cold War. There is no direct continuity at all between the two formations. There was, IIRC, a brigade-sized formation covering the islands of the eastern Aegean in the Interbellum, but again, IIRC, the battaions/regiments of each island marched to Albania individually. Thanks for that. Then, I suppose it would make sense to move the Archipelago Division paragraph into the 7th's article, instead of keeping it with the 98th. I've noticed you've changed the formation to brigade-size; the official Hellenic Army publication "Stratos ke Enimerosi" considers it a Division (it says as much in the reference I listed above). Hmm, I was under the impression that all ADTEs were brigade-level, and judging from its composition and strength, it looks that way to me. I may well be wrong, however. Constantine ✍ 13:12, 25 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect the army considers it a "small division". Most Greek Brigades consist of more-or-less 2 or 3 Infantry Battalions, with another two 2 or 3 Battalions in support (i.e. Armor, Artillery, Support, Signals etc.). The 98th has 5 Infantry Battalions with another 8 Battalions in support. You can argue its strength is that of a large brigade, but, I guess it, ultimately, comes down to what the Hellenic Army thinks it is. Dragases (talk) 13:59, 25 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
