Need more information[edit]

This article is lacking some rather important information. Unfortunately, none of my sources cover it - they just discuss Beattie's role as Chief Mechanical Engineer. The information most desperately needed is:

Beattie's dates of birth and death.
Where Beattie was from. The best I have is D. B. Leitch's book, which states that Beattie's successor was the first New Zealander to be Chief Mechanical Engineer, meaning Beattie can't have been born in New Zealand.
What Beattie did before he became Chief Mechanical Engineer, if it is of note.
