Get real!

Is this article a joke? Seems like the one who wrote it is in love with Abdul Kalam. I very much doubt that this man is Superman - but that's the picture this article paints. It would be nice to read something about him that at least seems to be reliable and not obviously is political propaganda written by his closest supporters.

Why so crippled?

Why the article has been crippled a lot? The image I have added (Image:Kalam zoomed in school photo.jpg)too have been removed. --Rrjanbiah 12:09, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

Tenure as a president ??

How come nothing is written about his tenure as a president????? Gprince007 05:14, 21 June 2007 (UTC). Lot of crucial things happened when he was a president, like returning office of profit bill and choosing manmohan singh over sonia gandhi. They surely deserve mention.

Protection

I protected the article following vandalism and an instant stream of protests to the Foundation. Feel free to have the page unprotected if you have sufficient resources to monitor it. David.Monniaux 06:10, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

Arabic letters

I do not understand how writng Kalams name in Arabic is relavant. It should be written in Hindi and Urdu. Arabic is neither an official language in India nor the language of Kalam. 70.64.15.193

POV

The People's President section is irreparably POV. The idea itself of a People's President section is POV. I just wanted to mention such a large change (removing the section) before I made it. Millancad 03:10, 25 July 2007 (UTC)

Apolitical President

I am not sure that Kalam is Apolitical at all. The term Apolitical doesn't mean that the person is not associated with any political party. Rather it means that the person is indifferent towards political parties. Since there is no source to say that Kalam considers all parties indifferently and doesn't, at a personal level, support any one, I think it would be logical to remove this sentence from the article. Cheers--Shahab 06:33, 25 July 2007 (UTC)

What's needed to make it FA

Hey guys can someone please make a shortlist of the essential things that need to be added/done to make this a featured article, so that some of us can get on with it. Regards -- Amit 23:12, 25 July 2007 (UTC)

I think info regarding Kalam's early life(1 full section), His career as a missile scientist(1 paragraph) and tenure as President(1 section) and his current life, is what is needed. Lots of the info can be taken from Wings of Fire including some of Kalam's quotations and possibly a few incidents. Cheers--Shahab 09:11, 28 July 2007 (UTC)

Its a very short article for a person like him. I believe there are lot of issues which are not reported here like his stands on various political issues. He was a very quite president and he completed the term quietly and I believe he would better serve the nation by teaching (which I think he would be doing). because our political system is such that they are their to just fill the pocket and let the nation rote to hell and now after this election the circle is complete. Ekant 15:54, 28 July 2007 (UTC)

I'll try and get some info from "Wings of Fire" -- Amit 05:00, 29 July 2007 (UTC)

When he joined DRDO his first project was building a hovercraft, which he successfully completed. If possible try to get the old pictures of Dr.Kalam and his friends assembling small rockets and taking it to the launched using bicycles in Thumba. Chanakyathegreat 13:36, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

I think I saw one of those in a newspaper, or perhaps it was a textbook... I'll see if I can get them -- Amit 14:33, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
I've got hold of the book, fellas (Wings of Fire). It's not very big, unlike what I thought. But I don't think I'll get around to reading it until next weekend. Amit 05:51, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

I also think that Info provided in Wikipedia is too short for a personality like APJ Abdul Kalam. More Information can be taken from the wings of fire like his famous quotes. I do not have book “Wings of Fire” If anyone has this book could you please provide all the quotes in section “His quotes”. His is one of the most loved President of India, this is not reflected in the article. He did so many great things when he was president but his work during his tenure as President is not provided so can anyone provide this. He is the most loved personality among children’s after Gandhi ji, Chacha Neharu and few others. We should have at least 15 to 20 pages of information on Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. Premchanda (talk) 04:25, 5 September 2009 (UTC)

People's President

seach google for "People's President" Some one seems to have an objection to calling Dr Kalam the people's president... 59.92.180.85 19:32, 29 July 2007 (UTC)

Kalam is a people's president and he is called by the Media and the people in that manner. In Wikipedia also the relevant change can be made. I support it. Chanakyathegreat 13:32, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

I have no objection to a sentence like "... have led to Dr. Kalam earning the sobriquet of 'People's president'"; provided it's backed up by some reference, which shouldn't be an impossible task. I suppose a news website like that of NDTV (which ran an sms campaign supporting his reelection) should contain it. Amit 12:37, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

Good!

Hey thanks, "The Idiot", for uploading the pic. Hope there are no copyright issues. Cheers -- Amit 04:13, 21 August 2007 (UTC)

Ph.D.

"usually and mistakenly referred to as Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam"

He has over 30 honorary PhDs and thats the reason he is called "Dr." So, shouldnt this line be removed??? 59.92.0.181 (talk) —Preceding comment was added at 12:40, 23 November 2007 (UTC)

A. P. J. Abdul Kalam doesn't have a "earned" Ph.D. Degree. The use of "Dr." before his name is falsification of his degrees. Honorary Ph.D. doesn't allow the receivers to use "Dr." before name. Amitabh Bachchan got Honorary Doctorate 5 Universities, then shall we start addressing "Dr." Amitabh Bachchan. Bill Gates has 4 Honorary Doctorates he should be then called "Dr." Bill Gates.

Enough of reliable sources refer him as Dr. So wikipedia also does. There is no law in the world, which says that you only have to have PhD for using the title Dr. --Vigyanitalkਯੋਗਦਾਨ 22:50, 25 August 2014 (UTC)
The Doctorate of A. P. J. Abdul Kalam is a "honor NOT a degree". So using Dr. before name is wrong. Talking about laws in the world. There is one law called "Law of Ethics and Morality". Please read controversies associated with Honorary Doctorates in Wikipedia itself. To educate yourself, you may want to read The Protocol School of Washington's Honor & Respect: The Official Guide to Names, Titles, & Forms of Address. I will not waste more time on this page. This page doesn't have facts. Many of the stuff written about the subject are NOT true, Ph.D., professorship, etc.
Are you paying attention to what I wrote? It does not matter if he is or not eligible of calling himself a Dr. I know he has only honorary PhD. But because him being a scientist people usually refer him as Dr. And wikipedia goes by the sources, so Wikipedia calls him a Dr. You may want to read WP:GREATWRONGS.--Vigyanitalkਯੋਗਦਾਨ 00:21, 27 August 2014 (UTC)

The disputed picture

The subject is not very well represented in the picture, I would say it adds almost nothing of worthwhile value to the article, why not simply remove it? Are there any objections to this? Off2riorob (talk) 17:23, 18 January 2010 (UTC)

What disputed picture ? Abecedare (talk) 17:29, 18 January 2010 (UTC)jsdkasjhd
Oh, I missed the BLPN posting; would have been better to simply discuss the matter here in the first instance. I don't think there are any legal or BLP issues with the image per se, but am fine with removing it, since I too don't see what it adds to the article (aside: to me it's clear that Kalam is reading something and not sleeping; just shows how each of us can perceive even "factual" information differently). Reverted career and removed quotes section

I have reverted career section as the current version was without a single reference. An entire quotes section is unnecessary and is trivia which is clearly against the policy of wikipedia.

US airport incident

I have twice edited this section, with edit note explanation, to remove implicit accusation of cover-up, exaggeration of details, apparently deliberate allowance of misinterpretation, repetition, unexplained abbreviations, and unexplained suggestion of a previous incident. This has been repeatedly reverted, without explanation, by the unregistered editor who proposed an exaggerated report an ITN. So if the current version is to be retained, please at least have the courtesy to address the following issues (in brackets) in the text here reproduced:

Abdul Kalam had his clothes removed (this gives an impression of a forcible strip search: his jacket and shoes were taken away briefly) for explosives inspections and was frisked by the United States (not by the whole country, and not with the knowledge of senior authorities: name the agency involved) while on a plane in New York on 29 September 2011. The former President (incorrect use of capital letter) was on the plane when he was frisked again (nothing in source says that he was frisked twice). He was separated from his jacket and shoes for a while(repetition of truthful element of first sentence). The incident was not reported until 13 November that year.

India threatened retaliatory action as there was a "general sense of outrage" around the country.[18][20] The Indian ambassador to the United States Nirupama Rao was instructed to raise the scandal at the "highest level" with Washington.[18] External Affairs Minister S. M. Krishna said the frisking of Dr. Kalam was "unacceptable and is being taken very seriously".[20] The Indian political class slammed (unencyclopaedic language) the United States and the Congress “condemned” its behaviour.[21] The Indian government released a statement expressing its disgust with the treatment of Abdul Kalam.[22]

The American media largely ignored the incident (impossible to verify, and unacceptably judgemental tone) though it received brief mentions on blogs run by Voice of America and The Wall Street Journal websites.[23][24] The United States said it was sorry for its breach of protocol.[19] CPI M (As previously asked twice: what is CPI M? Link it, explain it, or delete it) General Secretary Prakash Karat called for US citizens to be finger-printed and photographed in return.

Please address these issues, or restore my version of the text where they were not problematic Kevin McE (talk) 18:17, 14 November 2011 (UTC)

Name in Hindi

Can anyone add his name in Hindi? It would be appropriate as he is the president of India. Gsingh (talk) 21:42, 12 January 2012 (UTC)

No. Transliterations are used only to indicate how a name looks in its original language/and or as a pronunciation guides. --Sodabottle (talk) 03:17, 13 January 2012 (UTC)
Is this a wikipedia guideline or your personal opinion? Gsingh (talk) 03:44, 13 January 2012 (UTC)
There is no official guideline/policy yet. But this is the general agreed practice. There was a recent discussion on this in the india project noticeboard. You can read various views and solutions on this. But i know for sure adding hindi transcription to this article will lead to a edit war and retaliatory edits somewhere else and cause endless drama - which is why we advice not to use native scripts as only a transliteration aid and not as a "identity tool"--Sodabottle (talk) 06:53, 13 January 2012 (UTC)
