I think we need to change the intro paragraph. The K6-2 does not run on JUST socket 7, due to lack of voltage support. Hmmm. as for the person below me, I had pretty good luck with DivX by using a certain revision of BSPLAYER and FFDSHOW, using overlay mode (1 or 2, i cant remermber) in bsplayer... crappy interface but efficient programing.... Makes me hate how incompetent Mac is... P3-800 couldnt play run itunes playing mp3s without stuttering... Ahhh, the good ol' K6-2 ... by god didn't we all give it some stick!

My much abused 450mhz (I *think* that's what it was - it ran at so many different experiental speeds, i forget) took everything thrown at it and came up shiny, til it was sold on... Far better performing than it had any right to be (living long into the p2p era and only showing it's age when asked to play DVD-resolution DivX files whilst still pushing the cable modem to it's limit, and only managing 29fps instead of the required 30 hehe :-D) and far more resilient than the Athlon that replaced it, which i've had to clock down from it's original 600 (to 540, as low as the BIOS will allow) just to keep it stable as it managed to overheat even in retail HS+Fan form at the reccomended settings, let alone being overclocked! (am now looking for a replacement one on ebay so i can sell the old jalopy on in working condition!)

Good times, good times... don't think we'll see such things again now that intel and amd are running proprietary sockets, the freedom of consumer choice and competition just isn't as savage. When you can't swap suddenly to a competitor's product if you're not satisfied with the performance, without changing motherboard, memory etc, then there isn't the pressure for them to keep pressing ahead so much. Hence after the amazing flurry of progress from 25-33mhz up to 500-1000mhz (fuelled by said pressure and it's early aftershocks), it's taken forever to reach 4ghz, and we're still not "really" there.. -tahrey 20/1/07
