Merger proposal[edit]

I propose to merge Si5s into ASLwrite. Si5s is a system that never gained significant use or notability. All of the primary sources are gone and most of those referenced ASLwrite anyway. Secondary sources only include trivial mentions of Si5s. ASLwrite has similar notability issues and missing references, but ASLwrite is still in use and a few primary sources still exist. The minimal information available on the Si5s article can easily be explained in the context of ASLwrite. The ASLwrite article is of a reasonable size that the merging of Si5s will not cause any problems as far as article size is concerned. -Slevinski (talk) 20:24, 29 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

"somacheirographic" and "somacheirogram" aren't real words.[edit]

Why is Wikipedia using these words? There is absolutely NO definition available for these words online, and the ONLY website that uses these words in ANY context is Wikipedia. All other usages I've seen are just copies of these Wikipedia articles. So where on earth have these terms come from? They're not in any dictionary, and I just checked my physical copies of Oxford and Collins. Since when does Wikipedia use completely made-up words? Seems extremely unprofessional and unencyclopaedic. The reader sees "somacheirogram" listed as a category of script, but upon searching for the meaning of this word NOTHING can be found except for these Wikipedia articles! So what on earth is the origin of these terms? Seems like some overzealous Wikipedia editor devised them and decided they would use them without consulting anyone else. At least that's the only plausible scenario I can think of. 1.157.95.133 (talk) 16:38, 11 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Danachos: Please could you edit the opening sentence to replace "somacheirographic" with an understandable alternative — GhostInTheMachine talk to me 17:45, 26 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Proposal for Deletion[edit]

Following QueensanditsCrazy's proposal for deletion, I deleted the tag and added two additional sources to the live page.

Here I respond to the concerns of the tag:

In terms of notability, ASLwrite––as a daughter system to si5s––is actively used by a small, yet dedicated, corner of the ASL Deaf world. With 471 members as of 17 July 2023, the Facebook group has consistently grown and is currently rendering new uses of the writing system. Although it may not be the most widespread script, the fact of the matter is few sign writing systems are widespread. Its current use and sociolinguistic situation should be reason for this page to remain.

However, third are reliable sources of which are, true, are few. Handspeak provides us a secondary source (added today), but you are correct in that few other secondary sources exist. Unfortunately, there are few news outlets reporting its use, history, or current developments. This being said, I hope the Handspeak article ensure this page's continued existence, or that another news article comes out quick about ASLwrite

Thanks for the response and for your dedication to the article. I still think this doesn't qualify as notable, primarily because there are few reliable sources about it. The facebook group unfortunately doesn't qualify as being notable in its own right - contrast to Subtle Asian Traits which got BBC coverage and HuffPo. Perhaps I will nominate this for AfD where we can continue this discussion, if I remember to do that lol. QueensanditsCrazy (talk) 11:59, 18 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
