Request for wider input on discussion at WikiProject Tennis[edit]

There is a long, ongoing discussion at WP:Tennis about the tournament tables found in tennis articles on English-language Wikipedia (e.g., this type of table). The discussion is about whether the "official sponsored name" of a tournament - such as Pacific Life Open - or another tournament name without the sponsor - such as Indian Wells Masters - must be used in those articles. Please join the discussion here. Thanks. Tennis expert (talk) 08:40, 4 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

– Incomplete disambiguation as both tournaments are tennis tournaments, but they're held at different times, are on different tours and have different sponsors. Not sure what the best way of disambiguating is, but the current method is inadequate (Qatar Tennis disambiguates by sponsorship but that could change at any time so I don't like that method). @Iffy: I'm not sure what you want here. Qatar Open is a disambiguation page with two tennis tournaments,a table tennis event and a golf event. Since there is a disambiguation page, and the mens's event is usually called the "Qatar Open" we add our usual (tennis) after it. It's what we do for almost everything tennis related when the common name is taken. The women's event is often called the "Qatar Ladies Open" or "WTA Qatar Ladies Open" so that was no problem and we settled on the article without the WTA in front. All seems fine as they are already at separate articles. Fyunck(click) (talk) 19:07, 28 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The problem is that Qatar Open (tennis) is an accurate descriptor for both tournaments, as both call themselves the Qatar Open and are both tennis tournaments. IffyChat -- 23:19, 28 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
There are plenty of articles here that could go by similar names without a problem. I really don't see an issue here. The last item like this that you brought to my attention was an an article that had both the men's and women's events listed, but they were actually different tournaments. We split that one. This one they are already split. Common names for the events are Qatar Open for the men and Qatar Ladies Open for the women. Throughout history tennis events merge together, split apart, come back together, etc... Tennis has always been a mishmash when it comes to tournament locations, names, and level of play. You could quite easily merge these two events together in one article and simply call it the Qatar Open. It would be easier to edit and even easier for readers to find all the info if it were all in one place, even if the events are held a month apart. But it seems like you are trying to fix something that isn't broke. Fyunck(click) (talk) 00:09, 29 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
To make things easier for non tennis fans to comment, here are 3 options that I believe could work.
  1. ATP Qatar Open / WTA Qatar Open (by tour)
  2. Qatar Mens Open / Qatar Ladies Open (by gender, only changing the name of the Men's event))
  3. Qatar ExxonMobil Open / Qatar Total Open (by sponsorship)
I don't have any strong preferences which of these we go for (as all of them improve on the current titles), but as the opener of this RM I would prefer 1 and 2 ahead of 3. IffyChat -- 11:57, 3 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Number 3 is against Tennis Project Guidelines, since sponsorship changes all the time. Also, we usually name things by their common name (which is done right now), not something we just make up... so number 2 would be quite odd. It's possible to use ATP Qatar Open, since that is sometimes used, but there is no reason to change the women's event name because nothing is wrong with it. WP:INCDAB, both of these tournaments are tennis tournaments, but they're held at different times, are on different tours and have different sponsors. Qatar Tennis (the organiser of both events), the ATP and the WTA uses the sponsorship to differentiate between the 2 but most reliable sources outside of Qatar prefer to differentiate by the tour they're on, so that's my top preference here. I'd also support disambiguating by sponsorship instead (Qatar ExxonMobil Open / Qatar Total Open) as that's better than the current set of titles. IffyChat -- 17:07, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support - For several years it was called the Qatar Ladies Open and many sports press reports still use that term to separate from the men's event. However usually today I see the press simply refer to them as the Qatar Open or with WTA/ATP attached. Sponsors change from year to year so that would be a really bad choice, but ATP Qatar Open and WTA Qatar Open are terms that are also used and make sense here at wikipedia.
