Turrets?[edit]

What was supplied from the US? Bare guns? Complete turrets? Something inbetween? Just how much was supplied, and how much was built in the UK? How were these turrets transported and also unloaded (a turret is a considerable weight and there were very few cranes adequate for this). Andy Dingley (talk) 17:31, 27 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Sources (i.e. D. K. Brown's The Grand Fleet, Conways, seem to say turrets - it seems to have been turrets that were the thing that were in short supply rather than guns - which is why the next monitors to be built, the Lord Clive-class used old turrets from the Majestic class battleships - plenty of more modern 13.5 inch and 15 inch guns were available but turrets weren't.Nigel Ish (talk) 20:31, 27 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
My question really was "what was a turret". The ammunition, the hoists, the mount were all US. I was wondering about the gunhouse armour, the barbette and particularly the training gear. I now find that the training was electric, so that's US. Also the armour was supplied too, which rather surprised me (German armour was better, and Britain could have supplied it easily enough). Not sure about the mounting track, or where that was installed - but Belfast had no ability to build such a thing. I'd like to know what state they were in when they went to the Clyde for the turret installation. Andy Dingley (talk) 21:09, 28 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
