Population Numbers[edit]

I just removed most probably faked information entered by some IP on 21:10, 13 April 2007 about the city's population. There was no census in 2006 in Saudi Arabia! See [1]: There were censuses in 1974, 1992, and 2004. Can anyone find a reference for the population of slightly above 200,000 quoted before? --Eisenberg 19:35, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

The information on the ethnic and religious makeup of this district--primarily Shia with a large minority of Sunnis, but relatively few Wahhabis--is regularly removed by a vandal, whose preference is obviously for a Wahhabi or Sunni majority. Let it be so. One can falsify informative and vandalize Wiki, but the facts on the ground will survive. It is a sad thing to see even demographic information is not safe from prejudice and falsification. IzadyIzady (talk) 05:37, 11 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

As A Noun:[edit]

"Abha" (derived from classical Sanskrit common-noun "'Aabha'"^{spokensanskrit dictionary, input: aabha [use Brahmic/Indic/Devanaagri script].} </ref>the Brahmic family of languages</ref> is a commonly used word in India meaning "glow" or "hue" when used in the noun form^{per classical Sanskrit Vyakaran rules} (often used in poetry and literature in the context of describing moonlight, daybreak, colours of the gloaming, etc.).

It has also been a traditionally popular (feminine) given name among Indians.

As An Adjective:[edit]

The word may however be used in its adjective form as well^[1], as "abh" suffixed to the noun it is meant to qualify^[2].

A very popular modern-day example of the above could be cited as the (masculine) given name "Amitabh". ^[3] The name comprises of two separate adjectives, viz: Amit meaning "incomparable" (possibly derived from the Sanskrit "Amrit" meaning "sublime"/"immortal"/ "divine") and Abh (i.e. "glow"), together resulting in the final composite noun which denotes "one with the incomparable/divine glow".

Copyediting Notes[edit]

I did some copyediting after being referred from the Community Portal. The article could still use some more work in terms of fleshing out individual sections and adding citations. Below is some text I removed from the History section; it might be re-included following some intense scrutiny, perhaps by somebody who speaks Arabic (might help to understand the underlying grammar).

(From History secttion) The city referred to Saudi Arabia as a part of the 'free lands' - it became a part of Saudi Arabia after accepted the agreement which provided by King Saud, who had Islamic support, later a situation formalized in 1934 with the signing of the Treaty of Taif between Saudi Arabia and tribes. The treaty's terms were that the leaders of tribes would 'give' the land to Ibn Saud for supporting them in their defense against their greatest enemy of 60 years—this agreement came to an end in 1994, but another treaty was signed in 2000 agreeing the tribes-Saudi.
