Pueblo Journey[edit]

There is a beautiful book published on this in both an english and german version. I put it into the bibliography, see also the german wikipedia article. The part on the Pueblo Journey now is perhaps too long, but I of course would rather have the rest expande than to reduce the american part.--Radh (talk) 12:17, 19 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nit pik[edit]

Can there really be a "complacent Übermensch"? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.143.84.249 (talk) 05:05, 14 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It should be in the Gombrich biography somewhere, Warburg talks about complacent and sentimental (a crime in W.'s book) German tourists on their holidays, who had all read their Jakob Burkhardt or much worse and were all longing for a bit of Renaissance heroism to rub down on them. But cannot remember the exact words (so you win). Warburg never liked sentimentality (his remarks on Isadora Duncan: "holy sentiments and naked feet").--Radh (talk) 14:09, 14 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have to ask, also, about the following sentence: "Harmony and perfection only hide terrible conflict and rationality is always in danger of deep seated irrationality." Can this phrase be attributed to anyone relevant? A cursory search turns up no results attributing this to Warburg. In any case it should be cited and in quotation marks; and if it is not a direct quote from a relevant party, even if it might be in the spirit of Warburg, it is only loosely relevant to the preceding paragraph and inappropriately philosophical as an original contribution. Don't want to step on any toes, but I think it should be If someone can't find an appropriate direct quotation to this effect (or hopefully even more relevant to the narrative context of the subsection (Warburg's implied disillusionment with contemporary bourgeois society)) I think it should be removed. You are tight, it was a paraphrase, I think. Warburg was from time to time rather dissatisfied with bourgeois life (e.g. that of his family). I think too much has been made out of this (Gombrich?). He was more of an artist than a solid Bürger, that's all. --Radh (talk) 08:12, 19 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ebreo di sangue: Jew or Hebrew[edit]

While most translations have Jude or Jew, German philosopher de:Hartmut Böhme translates Ebreo di sangue, Amburghese di cuore, d'anima Fiorentino: Dem Blute nach Hebräer, dem Herzen nach Hamburger, der Seele nach Florentiner/ "A Hebrew by blood, Hamburg in his heart, Florence in his soul. H. Böhme: Aby M. Warburg (1866-1929). In: Axel Michaels (editor): Klassiker der Religionswissenschaft. Beck, München 1997, 2nd edition, p. 135. I've checked a few Italian sources and it seems that both ebreo and giudeo is used with the meaning of English "Jew". I don't know enough about Italian or Aby Warburg to be sure if what he meant was closer to English "Hebrew" or "Jew" - I think we should probably defer to the majority of sources that translate it as "Jew". ·Maunus·ƛ· 17:33, 14 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
A new search does seem to indicate that "giudeo" is the favored term by Italian anti-semites·Maunus·ƛ· 17:35, 14 November 2010 (UTC).[reply]
