Incomprehensible[edit]

I still don't understand what "active listening" is. It's not clear if it's a term from psychology or some other technical discipline, or whether it's "Active Listening (TM)", some kind of brand-name self-help technique. Can someone who knows rewrite the introduction? And perhaps drop capitalized uses of the term if that is in fact inappropriate? --Leonardo T. Oliveira 12:02, 4 July 2012 (UTC)

I agree that the introduction could be much more clear in its' definition of active listening. In addition, the article's lead could use a more enveloping summary of what the article is comprised of. Riley181 (talk) 04:15, 30 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that this article needs to start with some context. Sheherazahde (talk) 19:20, 1 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

So what you're saying is that the article doesn't adequately explain the origin or context in which active listening occurs. 205.250.212.114 (talk) 18:28, 14 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'll add that it is a commonly used technique in the human services. It's not related to a brand name. It comes from psychology, I guess applied psychology. It's the main technique peer counsellors are taught, for example, and one technique employed by therapists, particularly those in person-centered therapy (again, not a brand name; person-centered therapy originated with the psychologist Carl Rogers). You'd learn it in a communication skills course or beginning social work course.

There are too many "citation needed" comments in the article. There definitely need to be more sources, but no Wikipedia article has every detail referenced. Do we really need a reference to understand that hearing is a process that involves sound waves hitting the eardrum? 205.250.212.114 (talk) 18:35, 14 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Quite frankly, this article is rubbish from start to finish. It's peppered with pointless "Citation Needed" tags, and just needs starting again from scratch. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 165.193.168.6 (talk) 15:49, 26 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Digression?[edit]

There is a poorly-spelled and questionable digression on Aristotle, Australia, and scurvy at the end of this page titled "Active listening" which should be reviewed and edited by the authors of the actual substantive material contained on this page.

External Links[edit]

It is my understanding that the XLinkBot removes all *.blogspot.com link if it is not from a white listed user. A link I added (Active Listening) was thus recently removed by XLinkBot.

The link is useful as it offers relevant information that is not in the current Wiki entry. If the other editors agree, the link should be reconsidered for addition. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 59.92.115.227 (talkcontribs)

I think most of the external links now on the page (and the site mentioned above) score pretty low against the criteria at WP:EXT. "Offers relevant information that is not in the current Wiki entry" isn't really enough, although I'm not sure I'm bold enough to try to come up with a judgment about which ones to keep and which ones to remove. Music[edit]

Isn't this subject discussed in relation to music listening? --Leonardo T. Oliveira (talk) 14:29, 19 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Poor Quality Page[edit]

This article is still of a very poor quality. The opening paragraph doesn't give any definition of what active learning actually is, and digresses. The subsections appear to be a list of words conceptually connected to listening, along with their definitions. Those subsections are probably fitting to be merged together. I felt the need to say this, after coming here to learn about what 'active listening' is, and still being confused. I will try to update the page in the immediate future, although the content is just outside of my expertise. The page shouldn't reflect personal research. Parazoid77 (talk) 14:05, 30 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

This article is also inconsistent with the article on Reflective Listening, this one implies Active Listening is seperate technique to Reflective, while the Reflective Listening article implies Reflective Listening is a more specific subset of Active Listening. 101.165.114.232 (talk) 10:23, 18 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Application[edit]

This section is written in the form of a list which seems a bit redundant. I believe the applications of active listening occur wherever communication is present. Creating an exhaustive list seems impossible and so would be better summarized in a more concise and all-inclusive way. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Riley181 (talkcontribs) 20:35, 20 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Retaining[edit]

I understand what cramming is but what does it have to do with remembering information from a conversation? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Psych322TC (talkcontribs) 17:36, 22 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Active Listening[edit]

The Active Listening article on Wiki has really helped me and is such an important skill to obtain and develop because it helps you grow and strengthen the relationships you are in. The article explains very well and clearly the ways of responding and the ways to attentively listen during a conversation. From this you gain a deeper understanding of how the person is feeling by listening, watching their non-verbal communications, and providing feedback to the individual, if needed and wanted. This Active Listening article is overall a well-rounded source of information on this specific topic. 2605:7FC0:0:114:6827:22F:61C9:618C (talk) 01:47, 17 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I was able to gain some knowledge on the topic based on information and sources added. However, doesn't it seem like it is missing vital information to you? Karemblyvilla (talk) 02:25, 24 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Images/Media[edit]

If I can make one broad suggestion for this article it would be that it can use some images that enhance understanding of active listening. Samschmid (talk) 17:58, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
