Must actuality films be commercial?[edit]

How would we distinguish between, say, the actuality film of Eugen Sandow and my video recording of the Truro Fourth of July Parade? Is one an actaulity film, the other not? --across the synapse (talk) 05:41, 14 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The various Sandow films are not actualities; they are studio-made creations. This article is principally about a named historical genre of film that has a distinct beginning and end, from the first Lumière subjects until the appearance of the first newsreels. The section about actuality footage is included as it represents a different, more modern definition of the term and to prevent confusion, although I can see why it might confuse anyway. Is your video of the parade shaped in any way? Did you edit it? If you didn't, then it is actuality "footage," but it is not an actuality "film" as these only belong to the period before 1910.
