Result tables

Several IP editors have been repeated trying to convert some of the results tables into a single consolidated table. They have been reverted by User:Kolindigo who raised specific objections to the table consolidation at the talk pages of the IPs in question User talk:84.88.226.250, User talk:217.126.18.44. I don't have a particularly strong opinion either way, but I am more inclined to agree with Kolingo, particularly because editing one large table is rather more difficult than several smaller ones. In any event, the IPs need to stop re-introducing the single table untill and unless consensus to do so is established here, at this talk page. Nsk92 (talk) 18:20, 5 February 2010 (UTC)

Here are the comments I have left on those users's talk pages, regarding my general reasons for splitting up tables:

1) It makes them easier to edit for new editors, who may not be aware of exactly how tables work.

2) It cuts down on the need for "legacy" columns. A legacy column would be the kind in the Mirai Nagasu or Caroline Zhang articles, where the skater has once or twice competed at a competition that had a qualifying round. Under your use of one large table, the qualifying round column becomes a legacy column: it needs to keep being added and being left blank. It is cumbersome, and it makes it more difficult for new editors to keep up these tables.

3) Large tables are cumbersome to edit. There are various kinds of divisions, however, "by season" is the only truly truthful division. Seperating "by level" can be dishonest and incorrect because many skaters compete at more than one level in a season.

I also have additional reasons for reverting regarding general overformatting that seems, to me, to be for no purpose, such as inserting a whole lot of HTML breaks into programs boxes, including into the middle of wikilinks.

Openly gay?

Is this even true? There may be some sources that Adam Rippon is gay, but I don't think we can make any assumptions like that about his sexual preferences. Is this information encyclopedic and should this be in the article at all? --Chlorineer (talk) 22:54, 13 February 2018 (UTC)

Even so, and please don't get me wrong, but even if Adam mentions this openly, the scope of an encyclopedia is not to categorize "x" and "y" sportsmen and sportswomen as "gay", "bi", "trans", etc. It's a little demeaning to do so. Adam is a fantastic figure skater and does not need to be put in a little box created by us Wikipedians to categorize him. He's amazing regardless of his sexual preferences and a little intrusive to his private life if we flash throughout his article about who he likes (sexually). I don't know, but I don't want this to just become a blog stating that so ans o "is gay", or so ans so "is bi", and lets categorize them... into yada yada yada... like you know. He is noted for accomplishing vast success despite setbacks faced as a minority (as an openly gay athlete) and has become a "first", which is notable for encyclopedia. He has spoken out about his sexuality and how he uses his skating career as a platform to address these issues. Chlorineer, I couldn't agree more* and this is similar to a pet peeve of my own, which is the description of women as a "female x." Like, "so-and-so is a LADY doctor." You'd think Wikipedia would have moved far beyond this, but there's still a lot of this sort of language.

I do feel like Rippon's sexual orientation is being mentioned in the article because he's the first to do something, which is noteworthy (and has been in the news lately with this Pence stuff, which may or may not be big-picture noteworthy). I'm no expert, but that was my take. I know we have other articles here which contain similar mentions (not that that proves it's a good idea, but it's precedent). I just googled "first gay nfl player" and the Wikipedia page for Michael Sam was the first result.

Since most of the article is about Rippon's athletic achievements, I don't see the mentions of his personal life/orientation as being intrusive or derogatory, or, like, "look, a GAY one!!!" Again though, that's just my read, and I am no expert.

Surname pronunciation?

Does anyone have a source where Adam says his full name? I've heard people variously pronounce Rippon with the stress on the first or the second syllable. Umimmak (talk) 23:16, 17 March 2018 (UTC)
