Overseas France [2006][edit]

Some changes could be made for overseas France. Among the French "collectivités territoriales" are 4 "collectivités d'outre-mer" (overseas collectivities) (created by the constitutionnal law of 28 march 2003 - now article #74 of the French constitution). Each one has its own statutory law. The organic law of 27 february 2004 calls French Polynesia a "pays d'outre-mer" (overseas country), but also refers to its constitutionnal statute of overseas collectivity. So it has no resaon to be distinguished from other overseas collectivities. The law of 11 juillet 2001 calls Mayotte a "collectivité départementale" (departemental collectivity). Laws posterior to 28 march 2003 have kept this name. The law of 11 juin 1985 calls Saint Pierre and Miquelon a "collectivité territoriale" (territorial coll ectivity). Laws posterior to 28 march 2003 have kept this name. The law of 29 july 1961 calls Wallis and Futuna a "territoire" (territory) belonging to the category of the "territoires d'outre-mer" (overseas territories) that used to be constitutionnal. But no law posterior to 28 march 2003 have kept this name, probably obsolete since constitutionnal overseas territories have disappeared at this time. I think that since these 4 territories have the same statute they should be grouped, with a mention of each specific sub-statute. Nouvelle-Calédonie is not a "collectivité territoriale". Its unique statute has no name, that's why it is said to be sui generis. But collectivity is unappropriate. Its own law are called "lois de pays" (country laws), so it could be called a "pays" (country), though it would make a confusion with the finally uncreated general statute of "pays d'outre-mer" (overseas countries) and with the particular statute of French Polynesia.Jussia 12:47, 9 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nota : Cantons cannot strictly be said to subdivide in communes, because some big communes are divided among a few cantons.

St. Barthelemy and St. Martin [2007][edit]

Incidentally, note that they are still part of Guadeloupe until the first meeting of their newly elected territorial assemblies (scheduled for begin July 2007). I don't think it is worth correcting the articles, they shall be correct in slighty more than one month. French Tourist 16:28, 20 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Numbers of cantons, etc correct? [2008][edit]

Somewhat related topic: what do the numbers preceding each department mean (e.g. '01 Ain', '89 Yonne')? Seems like that should be explained at the start of that section. ...By someone who actually knows what the numbers mean. Niccast (talk) 21:07, 7 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Arrondissements of France [2009][edit]

Chart for overseas structure[edit]

{{reqdiagram}} File:Administrative divisions of Metropolitan France v2.svg is very helpful, but I was confused a bit until I realized the overseas parts of France were not included.
