"Interactive story" inconsistent with Interactive storytelling

"Interactive story" words are used (wikilinked to Interactive storytelling) in this article. But this is inconsistent with the "for" hatnote in Interactive storytelling article: "For the adventure game genres, see Interactive fiction and Visual novel." --109.54.8.184 (talk) 20:46, 22 February 2015 (UTC)

I removed the link. A quick look at the IS article makes it clear it is a very specific concept in describing on-the-fly ("in real time") creation of new stories based on the user's input, which in no way is part of the presentation of the vast majority of adventure games. There is no question, though, that adventure games rely upon the player participating in "an interactive story". The words are clearly intended merely to describe an aspect of the genre and they work fine as they're written. The link to interactive storytelling was the troublesome element and it should not be re-added. 72.200.151.13 (talk) 16:32, 22 April 2015 (UTC)

As a result of some discussion at WT:VG, I believe that the separation of Graphical adventure game from this article is unnecessary and that that should be moved into Adventure game.

For that to happen, there does need to be some trimming here. I think we need to rework the history section to split that between actual history, and then notable companies (as there definitely are companies that have defined this genre like Infocom, Sierra, Lucasarts, Telltale Games, etc.) and then focus on highlights than trying to rattle off every example. --MASEM (t) 00:44, 4 November 2015 (UTC)

This page already considers graphic adventure games as a subgenre of itself, but consists of two paragraphs while the GAG page is of not inconsiderable length. Concur, so long as an attempt is made to preserve the non-redundant content from GAG (eg both pages contain sections on "point and click adventures" and history sections on both pages mention some of the same games) Vynwood (talk) 15:47, 17 November 2015 (UTC)

By all means an attempt to retain relevant content would be made that is not already duplicated (for example, the decline and rebirth is similar to the one in the adventure game article, so unnecessary). One problem that both articles suffer from (particularly under the visual novel/japanese section of Adventure game) is that it is just primarily a list of games without significance. There have been a lot of adventure games, the goal should be here to identify seminal titles that strongly represent the genre or are critical to the genre's history. We can have a list and/or category page to ID all known adventure games - or at least those that have blue linked articles for notability, but we should focus on the core titles here. --MASEM (t) 16:20, 17 November 2015 (UTC)

Capcom and Professor Layton

Following on Ace Attorney's success, Capcom released Level-5's Professor Layton series, starting in 2007. Is this a mistake? As far as I know, Level-5 self-publishes PL in Japan, while Nintendo publishes it in the West.--IDVtalk 17:50, 8 February 2016 (UTC)

Difference between an Adventure video game?

Is there an obvious reason why we list this a normal game and not 'video game'? Can't we list as an Adventure video game or create another page with information about a the genre? There are reasons for this to be stated as such. And on another unrelated note, I specifically demand that we use Adventure video game instead of regular 'game' because specific things that require that is outside of the 'video game' genre, which should be it's own specific genre. I grow tired of having the simple word 'game' listed in a 'video game' list, in which case it does not work that way. It should never work that way. Wikipedia articles like the lists are beginning to get 100% wrong with every passing day. Why do we use this and why can't we use both? The obvious reason is that when someone refers to an "Adventure game" they typically think of a video game. If you're referring to "Adventure Board Games", and the earliest Adventure Board Games typically were considered RPG's by today's standards, not "Adventure games" in the sense of exploration, puzzle solving and inquisitive speculation by the player. Also, seeing as "Hunt the Wumpus" came out before the first Adventure Board Game "Dungeon!", I think "Adventure Video Games" have earned the broader title of "Adventure game". Tag of "bias or disproportionate coverage"

In December 2017 this article was tagged for having "bias or disproportionate coverage". As I looked into this talk page I did not see a write up of the rationale for adding that tag to the article. I do not know whether or not in fact the article needs that kind of improvement. I thought it would be good to start a discussion here to see what the community thinks. If I had to guess Coins intention, I'd come up with the section on Japanese adventures being longer than the section on "western adventures", which would be curable since there's plenty of literature out there to enhance the section on "western adventures". I also see there's a lot of references provided, which maybe could be thinned out a bit here and there. Apart from that I also have no clue what Coin wanted to say. As an editor who has created many articles on the Czech and Polish adventure gaming industry, I inserted the tag more as an invite for people too add content that is not Anglo-centric or Japan-centric, and instead acknowledges the rich history of adventure games in places like Eastern Europe... and even Israel.--Coin945 (talk) 07:39, 3 July 2018 (UTC)

I also think it is very suspicious that the Western history, which invented the genre and had far more big-name entries, more sales, and more influence on the genre as a whole, is smaller than the Japanese section. There is also contradicting information, where in the Western section it says the first point-and-click game was Enchanted Scepters, but in the Japanese section it says Planet Mephius was the first "point-and-click" game. There either needs to be some clarifications, edits to emphasize the differences, and additions overall. I would suggest separating Graphical Development in the Western History section into two parts, focusing on Graphic Adventures (text-based adventure games with graphical portraits) and the advent of point-and-click games. There is also mention of a lack of content restrictions on games in the Japanese market with eroge content, but that does not particularly make sense since Leisure Suit Larry was also insanely popular and rife with nudity.Belregard (talk) 21:12, 6 December 2022 (UTC)
UPDATE - I've been spending several hours today updating incorrect information, removing exhaustive details, removing unnecessary mentions, and correcting the wording and syntax of the Japanese section. Whoever wrote that section needs to take some medication, because they went way overboard on it and clearly had some sort of agenda, claiming clearly incorrect things, among them being that the PC-88 had higher resolution graphics than Western counterparts (it didn't), that the first commercial erotic game was a Japanese eroge from 1982 (which it wasn't, as Softporn Adventure released a year earlier), that Spy 007 and Hokkaido Chain Murders introduced overhead maps and command menus (they didn't), and a plethora of other minor corrections I couldn't even begin to count. Someone needs to keep an eye on the quality control of this article because it is ridiculous.Belregard (talk) 01:24, 12 January 2023 (UTC)

Fixing Citations

Need assistance on fixing the citations for numbers 26 and 28. I tried fixing some of the page numbers but I am unsure of how to go about changing them myself. I went into the book being referenced and found contrary information. For citation number 26, the changes should remain, but the page numbers should be 321, where it states, from the book, "Adventure games frequently include lateral thinking puzzles." - Which is contrary to the previously stated reference that was there before the edit, saying that Adventure games commonly used "Logic puzzles". On logic puzzles, the book being references says "Adventure games often present logic puzzles as combination locks or other machinery that the player must learn to manipulate because those devices make sense in the fantasy world in which the game exists" - Which is intrinsically different, and is not on pages 444-445, but page 310. If I could simply have some assistance straightening this out I would be very appreciative.Belregard (talk) 02:27, 23 January 2023 (UTC)

I fixed the citation errors for 26 and 28, and changed the page number for 26 from 320 to 321 (I couldn't find a source that was written by just Adams, but he co-authored the book that is frequently used as a reference, so I changed it to that). I removed Jenkins443-444 and Adams444–445 as they were not used in the article, but I assume you know their appropriate place and how to change the page numbers where that is needed. (Should this not be the case I would be happy to help with that!)
I would also like to use the {​{sfn}​} format for this article, if you're okay with that. It functions the same as the citation format that's currently used but doesn't need to be defined separately. Apologies. I added the extra bit of info and the missing footnote to the page.
I changed the cite templates for the citations that refer to specific pages. {​{sfn}} looks for a {​{cite}} where the parameters for an author's last name and year of publication are filled in, and will automatically fetch it if it can find it or give an error if it can't. To change a page number now all you need to do is change the number(s) after p= (if it's one page) or pp= (if it's multiple).
