Importance[edit]

Out of interest, how come Sea Scouts are considered to be "Top" importance, but Air Scouts are considered "Low"? DiverScout (talk) 09:07, 2 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

They got it wrong? Just fix it. --Bduke (Discussion) 11:01, 2 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I did wonder, but always like to ask before being bold in case there is a reason. DiverScout (talk) 11:34, 2 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I can not see a reason, so I fixed it. I think all Scouting articles that are fully international in scope should be of top importance, but others may disagree. --Bduke (Discussion) 22:44, 2 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

UK Air Scouts citation needed[edit]

I have added a "citation needed" tag to the statement that "Currently around 10% of all Scouts in the (UK) Scout Association are in one of the 160 Air Scout Troops or Explorer Units." At the 2013 census there were 6,922 Scout Troops in the UK according to "The Scout Association's Annual Report and Accounts 2012-2013" (PDF). The Scout Association. Retrieved 20 October 2013., while Factsheet FS295107 (Nov 2004) Air Scouting says that there were 140 Air Scout Groups at that date - I couldn't find anything newer. That makes a bit less than 2% by my calculations. Although there may be more Air Scout Groups now, there would need to be nearly 700 to reach 10%, so it seems a bit unlikely. The other explanation is that Air Scout Troops and Units are all five times larger than the average, which seems unlikely too. Alansplodge (talk) 19:03, 25 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I've been one of the few County AAAs in the UK since 1999. I've just seen the 10% figure while away on holiday and if it's true I'll eat my beret. If I had to guess a figure, I'd say about 1% nationally. I shall find out a real figure next time I'm at Gilwell, but Alansplodge's calculations seem very reasonable to me. I could believe 3% with evidence, but 10%? No way. I suspect this might be a figure involving the BP Scouts instead, but for their own reasons they're no keen to publish stats. 202.142.138.34 (talk) 08:43, 27 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Not down to us. We don't contribute to TSA figures and are not interested in publishing our own (as we don't consider membership numbers to be indicative of standards). Air Scouts are also a very small fraction of the B-PSA. DiverScout (talk) 18:54, 27 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The problem with the UK stats is that it only picks up Air Scout Groups where previously the person completing the annual Census ticks the box labelled '[ ] Air Scouts' {same problems for some of the Sea Scout Groups}. The additional problem is that not all Air Scout Groups have "Air" in their Group name so compiling and double checking groups on an Air Scout Group listing is a nightmare! [I know as I have had to do it!]. There are also a small minority of Groups that have multiple Troops - one of which is an Air Scout Troop - again those are difficult to keep on top of. an even smaller number of Troops have Air Scout Patrols - I would guesstimate that that would account to no more than ~50 young people. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Astroflight (talkcontribs) 22:43, 27 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
