History notes[edit]

The first available map is from 1926.

  • Mobile to Thomasville: SR-6; SR-5 by 1928; SR-13 by 1957
  • Thomasville to Safford: SR-6; SR-5 by 1928
  • Safford to north of Woodstock: SR-35; SR-5 by 1928
  • North of Woodstock to Birmingham: SR-2; SR-5/SR-7 by 1928
  • Birmingham to Jasper: SR-8; SR-4/SR-5 by 1928; SR-4 removed by 1997
  • Jasper to Haleyville: none; CR-29 by 1955; SR-4/SR-5 by 1957; SR-4 removed by 1997
  • Natural Bridge to Haleyville: none; SR-195 by 1951; SR-5/SR-13 by 1957; SR-5 removed by 1995
  • Jasper to Haleyville via Double Springs: SR-43; SR-5 by 1928; SR-195 by 1957
  • Haleyville to Phil Campbell: SR-43; SR-5 by 1928; SR-5 removed by 1995
  • Phil Campbell to Florence: SR-5; different SR-5 (see below) by 1928; SR-13 by 1957
    • Note: it's unclear if SR-5 was extended north from Phil Campbell when SR-17 was moved off what is now SR-237. USGS shows that it was or that it even used the old road: [1] [2]
    • More notes: The 1964 map is the first to show the completed bypass of Spruce Pine; the old route is also shown as a numbered route, but no labels are shown. In 1965 the new SR-17 is open; the old route through Spruce Pine disappears by 1972. No official maps have shields along this section.
  • Florence to Tennessee: SR-50; SR-5 by 1928; SR-13 by 1957
Continuations of 1926 routes
  • SR-6: Safford to Selma
  • SR-43: Jasper to Bankston

The initial SR-5 was split among SR-18, SR-19, SR-13, SR-5, and SR-34 in the renumbering. The overlap of old and new SR-5 between Phil Campbell and Florence is probably coincidental. These routes underwent many changes; the first map that shows another route between Phil Campbell and Florence is 1954, which takes SR-17 to Florence (but leaves SR-34 alone). In 1955, SR-17 extends northwest from Florence to Tennessee. The major renumbering between 1955 and 1957 resulted in SR-17 replacing SR-34, with the old route north of Florence becoming SR-157. SR-5 is truncated to Phil Campbell, with SR-13, which had ended there, continuing north (though using a different alignment to Phil Campbell, making SR-5 north of Natural Bridge "useless").
