Icefields Parkway, Hwy 93, or both?

This article appears to take the name of only one portion, the Icefields Parkway portion, of Alberta Hwy 93. With the segment of Hwy 93 (from Hwys 1/1A at Castle Junction to the BC border enroute to Radium Hot Springs) not being named as Icefields Parkway, the current name of the article may have been an oversight to this highway in its entirety. What shall be done about this oversight? Rename to Alberta Highway 93, with Icefields Parkway redirecting to a Alberta Highway 93#Icefields Parkway, and with the renamed article having the following sections?

• Icefields Parkway
• Route
• Highway 93A
• External links

If I recall correctly, I came across this issue over a year ago. This segment south of Castle Junction (Banff–Windermere Parkway) is labeled as Highway 93 on road maps, but the Alberta Transportation map did not label it. After reviewing the signage,[1][2][3][4][5] (where I found no Alberta 93 signs), I determined it was part of BC Highway 93. Upon another review, Parks Canada maintains both the BC and Alberta portions of the Banff–Windermere Parkway, as the BC portion is in Kootenay National Park, and the Alberta portion is in Banff National Park. Also, Parks Canada prefers naming roads, rather than numbering. So really, the Banff–Windermere Parkway is one road, and it would be wrong to split it, and merge with provincial designations. I believe the correct thing to do is create three separate articles, for three separate roads:

• Kootenay Highway,
• Banff–Windermere Parkway, and
• Icefields Parkway.

Parks Canada maintains all highways within national parks, so the Icefields Parkway, like the Banff–Windermere Parkway, is also not maintained by Alberta Transportation. This is why all national park highways in AT's provincial highways progress charts are grey and not listed in the map legend, and likely why AT's Provincial Highways Designation Order (unfortunately not posted on the web as far as I know), indicates that the number 93 is reserved for future use by AT.

Considering the Banff National Park segment of the Banff–Windermere Parkway as part of BC Hwy 93 would be incorrect since it is in Alberta. If BC maintained the Alberta segment of the highway, then there may be weight behind including it under BC Hwy 93.

I like where you are going with your suggestion above, and would like to take it a little further by proposing the following article structure:

• British Columbia Highway 93 (entire route from MT to AB borders, not giving undue weight to the Banff–Windermere Parkway segment over the balance of the route, but providing a Main Article: Banff–Windermere Parkway within the article where appropriate);
• Alberta Highway 93 (generally describing both segments, not giving undue weight to any of the two segments, but providing both a Main Article: Banff–Windermere Parkway and a Main Article: Icefields Parkway within the article where appropriate);
• Banff–Windermere Parkway (only about both the AB and BC segments of Hwy 93 between Redium Hot Springs and Castle Mountain, with significantly more detail than what is presented at BC Hwy 93 and AB Hwy 93); and
• Icefields Parkway (only about this segment of AB Hwy 93, with significantly more detail than what is presented at AB Hwy 93).

This would avoid converting the first two to disambiguation pages.

As for signage, no Alberta 93 signs appear to be used on the Icefields Parkway as well.[6][7][8]

As for Parks Canada's preference, I don't know if it favours naming over numbering or not. What seems apparent is they assign the numbers applied to provincial highways that enter parks to those segments within the parks, so as to not confuse the traveler with different number assignments, or changes from numbered to named upon entering and back upon leaving. Further to last night's comments, the BC Hwy 93 article could have its own Kootenay Highway and Banff-Windermere Highway sections, and AB Hwy 93 could have its own Banff-Windermere Highway and Icefields Parkway sections. The master Km by km description tables for the two highways could be at the Banff-Windermere Highway and Icefields Parkway articles, with <onlyinclude> functions to auto-populate the applicable sections of the BC Hwy 93 and AB Hwy 93 articles to avoid duplication of effort, just as you did with List of communities in Alberta from all of its various embedded main articles. I would prefer the first option, with km lists in the named highways articles, and not in the province 93 articles. It wouldn't make sense to have km in the other province on a province specific article. If you would like to go ahead with the changes feel free to, it doesn't seem like anyone else is paying attention. As a side note, a provincial highway can go into another province, SK hwy 17 has portions in AB, and visa versa, and Alberta Highway 1A goes 3km into BC (but in hindsight it is like this one, being maintained by Parks Canada). 117Avenue (talk) 09:31, 5 January 2011 (UTC)
