Are triglycerides alkyds?[edit]

The definition given for aklyd seems to include triglycerides (animal and plant fats and oils) but does not come out and say so. In particular, stating that the original alkyds were synthetic seems to deny this fact. Later in the article it is explained how triglycerides are used as the feedstock for making synthetic alkyds. Assuming triglycerides are indeed alkyds, this should be stated just before the "The original alkyds were compounds of..." part, and this sentence should instead read "The original synthetic alkyds were compounds of..." The mention of triglycerides could include common examples such as linseed oil. Conversely, if triglycerides are by convention not considered to be alkyds, the article so state this and ideally explain why. 192.102.11.78 (talk) 15:13, 3 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Major clean up[edit]

I have worked with alkyds and alkyd paints and varnishes for over 40 years. I will spend time on this article and start cleaning it up. This will not be quick. I have loads of books and journals on the subject so I will also expand the references. GRALISTAIR (talk) 13:59, 14 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
