Prague was not imperial city of Holy Roman Empire. Imperial city was used from the fifteenth century to denote a self-ruling city that had a certain amount of autonomy and was represented in the imperial diet. Prague, a capital of the Kingdom of Bohemia, was not among them, viz https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_imperial_city.

I replaced the heading image with a lithograph since I thought it was more appropriate. Saving the old image here... Eliot 03:09, 7 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Spelling of first name[edit]

There appears to be confusion over the spelling of his name:

  1. "A History of Graphic Design," 1998 by Philip B. Meggs lists his name as "Aloys"
  2. "Typographic Design: Form and Communication," 2002 by Rob Carter, Ben Day and Philip Meggs lists his name as "Aloys"
  3. The article itself says he was born "Aloys"

What evidence is there that he actually went by "Alois?" --Parhamr 04:54, 9 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Anecdote about the discovery of the stone's capability[edit]

The 1911 Britannica article contains a charming anecdote about his realization that the stone could be easily used for etching: it's to do with his mother and a washerwoman's bill. I'm not sure that even its inclusion in Britannica validates its authenticity, so that's why I included only a poster reference to the article. David Brooks (talk) 17:32, 17 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
