Addition of advert template[edit]

Hello all! I have stumbled across this article after clicking on a link to it in the VRChat article and I must say that it is in need of much work! Most of this article is written like an advertisement, which is completley unacceptable for an encyclopedia. Language, such as "boasts a robust and diverse content calendar" (with inappropriate external link), "AltspaceVR's userbase is a diverse group of people from all over the world.", "AltspaceVR has been the virtual venue of choice for many major events", etc. does not fit a neutral point of view and should be dealt with. I plan to start on it at some point when I get time, but anyone is welcome to work on these issues. ~the.one.and.the.only~ (talk) 00:27, 9 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I have chosen to go ahead and made edits that I think are desperately needed to restore the article's neutral point of view. Please have a look at these changes and tell me if they need improvement, reversal, or if I missed something. This is far from complete, but this edit at least tries to remove marketing jargon, personal/corporate opinions, and add citation needed tags where appropriate. Something else users should consider is this article's existence, and if it fulfills Wikipedia's notability requirements, as is needed for an article to be present here. Again, let me know what you think are appropriate next steps. ~the.one.and.the.only~ (talk) 01:26, 9 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, the article certainly needs some clean-up. As an Altspace user for 3 years I think the article's worth having. Anecdotally, Altspace seems to be more widely used than most of the chat-space type programs I've tried, and I'd call it notable, but the article needs to be made encyclopaedic. We could do with sections on history and reception, and I dispute the statement in the lead that it's "centred around live events". It's centred around user-generated "worlds" and person-person interaction, the events always feel like an afterthought to me. I'm willing to have a go at improving it, but just about all my knowledge of the platform is first-hand so I don't know what secondary sources are out there.
I get the impression that a lot of the announcements and reviews about Altspace are made using Discourse and Reddit, which are not always seen as reliable sources.
As an aside, the tone of the article has got me wondering if Microsoft is planning to phase out the user-generated parts in the long term, which at the moment wouldn't leave much - even a lot of the big events take place in user-generated spaces. There, I've added a bit. I included a note about the 'phone app being discontinued, partly because the decision to drop it was never mentioned in the app (which was still in the play store, last I looked) so the information might be useful to people with an interest in the platform. If it wasn't un-encyclopaedic I'd also mention ALtVR's history of quietly abandoning other platforms with little or no prior warning... but I'm not bitter. ;) Pastychomper (talk) 09:46, 21 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
