Untitled[edit]

Hmmm... seems a little lopsided with only about a third of the page dedicated to the AAA and two thirds related to controversies. Not that the controversies aren't interesting or important, but couldn't we have more general and background information?

Bibliography/Reference format[edit]

I'm wondering if it would be helpful for this article to have a section on the AAA's Code of Ethics? It is mentioned in at least two articles (Human Terrain System and Ethnography) ...

RACE: Are we that different?[edit]

In this section, there is implication that race was "invented". Are you saying that "race" is not hereditary. Putting the issues of Ethics, Legal and Social aside, can you just make a statement that DNA can or cannot be used to determine race. Human Genome Project has a statement:

DNA studies do not indicate that separate classifiable subspecies (races) exist within modern humans. While different genes for physical traits such as skin and hair color can be identified between individuals, no consistent patterns of genes across the human genome exist to distinguish one race from another. There also is no genetic basis for divisions of human ethnicity.

This statement basically contradicts itself and needs a bit of clarification. If DNA is being used for criminal forensics, from bones are they able to determine if the race or ethnic? Same question for establishing paternity on living humans, can they determine dominant race?

When I see statements such as "race was invented", and "race is an illusion", I have to question genetic determinism for any purpose.

"no consistent patterns of genes across the human genome exist to distinguish one race from another" sure they can. using overall genetic similarity a person is closer to the maxima of one cluster or another. they cannot be simultaeneously closer to two maxima. therefore races defined by genetic similarity population maxima are sharply discontinuous. further, one could define race as an arbitrary division of a spectrum, like map squares, again based on egnetic similarity. how are you defining race to claim no genetic patterns satisfy it? people assert this with no definition, so it's meaningless. It is certainly premature to make any mention of this. The resolution has not been passed yet, but is going out for a general vote among the members. Could you link to guidelines that suggest the importance of media coverage. I am honestly curious because I have seen legal and social action mentioned with little media coverage.
