Importance

  • I don't know what this comment means, but if it's questioning the notability of the organization, I too have some questions about that. However, WP:ORG is pretty lenient, and so AHG's claims to have members across the nation probably meet notability tests. --Lquilter (talk) 22:47, 3 March 2008 (UTC)

Prayer at Girl Scout meetings

Though the American Heritage Girls founders claim Girl Scouts have banned prayer at meetings I can not find evidence of this. I did find

"Girl Scouting has a spiritual foundation and places value on individual personal development. Each girl is encouraged to become an active member of her own religious group and to respect the varying beliefs and practices of others" (Troop Leader Resource Guide, p. C4). Every Girl Scout meeting begins with some form of structured routine. This could be a song, flag ceremony, reciting the Girl Scout Promise and Law, sharing a poem, etc. Some troops may choose to open with a prayer. However, "Girl Scout groups must recognize that religious instruction is the responsibility of the parents and religious leaders" (Blue Book of Basic Documents, p. 21). Opening with a prayer from any religion is fine as long as a variety of prayers are used to educate the girls about different faiths, and this is what the girls have agreed upon. The troop needs to be respectful of the varying religious opinions and practices of its members in planning this type of activity. In addition, "when a Girl Scout troop is sponsored by one religious group, members of different faiths or religious affiliations within the troop shall not be required to take part in religious observances of the sponsoring group" (Blue Book of Basic Documents, p. 21).

Membership numbers

The listed 19,000 members is not supported by the cite which lists no numbers (though apparently the link updates frequently so may have had a number earlier). The most recent cite I can find is http://www.ahgonline.org/uploads/AHG_celebrates16sweetyears.pdf (September 2011 press release) which claims 14,000 members (no breakdown on adult volunteer versus youth membership) and hopes to reach 18,000 in 2012. Their annual report http://www.ahgonline.org/uploads/10_11AnnualReportweb.pdf lists 13,837 members for 2010/2011 (10,383 of whom are girls). I will be changing the number and referencing the annual report (which is a better source than a fact sheet). --Erp (talk) 03:53, 11 November 2012 (UTC)

"Scouting" organization

I don't see anywhere on http://www.ahgonline.org where AHG describes itself as a "Scouting" organization. I tried to delete the word "Scouting" from the lead of this article, but my edit was reverted. Could someone please provide a reliable source that AHG is a "Scouting" organization? Thanks! They cannot (or choose not to) use the word "Scouting" due to the Boy Scouts' "super" trademark of the word "Scouting" which they allow the Girl Scouts to use. This AP article clearly shows it is an alternative to Girl Scouts. --Spshu (talk) 17:38, 11 January 2014 (UTC)
The lead now shows Scout-like, which I think is a better fit. The AHG formed as a breakaway from the GSUSA and does maintain some of the GSUA features. It is an informal educational program with outdoor elements, but there is no stated connection to B-P's implementation of Scouting. --  Gadget850 talk 17:58, 11 January 2014 (UTC)
