Details needed on Steam plant[edit]

What else is the steam plant used for?

Is there a calliope onboard? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.103.144.161 (talk) 07:59, 4 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

According to ("American Queen". steamboats.org. Retrieved 2010-01-24.) the steam engines were taken from the US dredge Kennedy and the sternwheel provides the primary propulsion whereas the diesel-electric Z-drives provide maneuverability. The reference mentions that the AQ's caliope has 37 gold plated brass pipes. 67.86.75.96 (talk) 19:53, 24 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Although YouTube URLs are typically removed from article citations since they are not considered to be reliable sources, the video at this URL nevertheless demonstrates the answer to the questions posed. In the video clip the AQ is seen departing the dock in front of Hannibal, Missouri under sternwheel power (note the turbidity provided by the wheel) while Professer Steve Spracklin plays the caliope. Note also the towboat seen travelling in the opposite direction off the starboard side of the AQ (hence it is a nice scene of typical Mississippi River traffic). 67.86.75.96 (talk) 22:39, 24 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

size comparison[edit]

There are at least two vessels with claims to being the largest steam riverboat: The Mississippi (and tributary) plying sternwheeled AQ and the Hudson River plying sidewheeler Washington Irving. Here is a comparison table of size metrics: 67.86.75.96 (talk) 19:46, 24 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
