Where did the photo of Lord Jeffrey Amherst come from? I work at Amherst Museum and we had to acquire the rights from the museum that holds that painting to use that image in our exhibit and the Grande publication listed below. I feel certain no such permission was obtained for placement on Wikipedia. It should probably be removed. --Hiraeth (talk) 20:11, 24 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I grew up in Amherst ... not sure North Bailey and Grover Cleveland Terrace are really communities. North Bailey and Maple is exclusively commercial except for a small neighborhood east of North Bailey/Wegmans. I've never heard anyone say they live in North Bailey, like they'd say they live in Eggertsville. Also never heard of Grover Cleveland Terrace. Thoughts? Vesperholly 08:52, 6 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

--> Certainly I've heard of both, but you could be right. That small neighborhood east of Wegman's is there, and it doesn't fit into any of the other hamlets; I think the main justification for keeping it is that it's a fire district. Grover Cleveland Terrace, however, does not belong on that list; I've never heard of it either, and even checking Mapquest, there's only GC Highway, as a street. Also: another change I've made is to the language which originally read, "All the areas listed below are governed and run by the Town of Amherst except for the Village of Williamsville, an independent political entity with its own village Mayor and board." Using the word "except" there is incorrect; that would mean that Williamsville is not governed by the Town of Amherst, and I assure you that it is. Williamsville has its own mayor and board and oversees certain services for village residents, but it is part of Amherst, it votes in the same Town elections, is represented by Town officials, pays taxes to the Town, and has the same Town services (police, for example) as any other community in Amherst. I don't think that Town Court link in the "External Links" section is appropriate. It's a link to a directory listing of Town Courts (specifically, I think, traffic courts), not to the Amherst Town Court's official page. --Hiraeth 16:43, 28 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I removed the "History" information related to the October 2006 storm. I believe that it was out of place and consumed too much of the reader's attention at the beginning of the article. Under the heading "History" for the the town, four out of five paragraphs should not be devoted to a single event. Furthermore, since "History" is the sub-heading that appears first in the article, if information on the storm is included there, than geography and other town facts are discussed before they are introduced in their own subheadings later in the article. Perhaps a brief mention and a link to a new page relating to the storm would serve the purpose. That new page could be linked to from other pages of Western NY municipalities that were affected by the storm. For the moment, this article on Amherst is better without the storm information at the beginning. --Bhess 04:29, 5 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]


A few edits... Getzville Post Office was left off, as one of the remaining non-consolidated. Also, changed the wording very slightly re: farms in the northern part of Amherst. Saying "active farms are still to be found in Amherst" (paraphrasing) makes it sound like there are plenty of them. In truth, there's only a few -- Spoth's, Papke (which I believe is a wholesaler), and possibly Badding Bros., or did they close? I changed it to something along the lines of "only a few" or some such, which gives a more accurate depiction.--Hiraeth (talk) 17:15, 8 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

IMO, the Police Department section needs editing. The APD is awesome! but right now it's too wordy, with too many small details, and way too much history. I think an ideal section would show when it was founded, who the first officers were, significant changes (location) in the department, and a description of the department as it is today. Listing every chief in the department's history isn't appropriate for this article, which is about the Town of Amherst, not the history of the department. We aren't listing everyone who's ever served as Town Supervisor, so it doesn't make sense to list every APD Chief. Don't get me wrong! The APD has a great & proud history, I just don't think it all belongs in this article. But -- let's discuss before changes get made. Any thoughts? --Hiraeth (talk) 17:19, 8 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I too grew up in Amherst, and lived there for 30 years. I have an issue with the inclusion of Brian McKnight as a Notable Resident. While the McKnight Family did indeed live in the town briefly (they were our next door neighbors, I am still close with the family), the family relocated to the Orlando, FL area in 1976, when Brian was seven years old. Considering that the Town of Amherst was a distant memory by the time Brian achieved success as an R&B artist, I think it's misleading to include him as a "Notable Resident", since it implies that he STILL resides in a town which he has not set foot in for over THIRTY YEARS. Therefore, I have removed his name from the article. I think it should stay out of the article unless someone can justify WHY he should be included as a "Notable Resident", since he achieved notoriety nearly two decades after the family left the town and made their home elsewhere.Osirisascending (talk) 22:36, 22 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Williamsville[edit]

Why does the article say that "the town of Amherst encompasses most of the village of Williamsville"? As has been mentioned by other commenters, Williamsville is completely part of the town. (Unless the author is getting confused-- fairly common-- between the village of Williamsville and the Williamsville postal zone. 14221 and the political entity of Williamsville are not the same!) I think this should be corrected to drop the 'most'. How about:

"... the town of Amherst encompasses the village of Williamsville and the hamlets of..."

or maybe even something like:

"... the town of Amherst encompasses the village of Williamsville (incorporated) and the hamlets of Eggertsville, Getzville, Snyder, Swormville and East Amherst (unincorporated)"
