I see that Mark Goodge's private access portal [1] British Listed Buildings has been used as a source rather than the government http://historicwales.gov.uk/ . BLB is handy though as it includes three countries. I think the gov site is safer than a self published one. SovalValtos (talk) 20:50, 31 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Historic Wales is new to me, so thank you. It hasn't come up in Google searches. I think BLB is ok, though, because text is lifted from source, and sources are listed. I don't think we can exclude sites just because they are compilations or self-published, if they are academically-driven and non-commercial. GENUKI, for example, always lists sources, so I consider it trustworthy. I suppose it's a matter of judgement and balance - and finding enough sources to back up the article. Is a 100-year-old newspaper snippet any more reliable? What is reliable, come to that? A certain amount has to be taken on trust. Tony Holkham (Talk) 21:00, 31 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

To editor SovalValtos: I've been exploring Historic Wales. How could I have missed this? I may go back to some of the BLB refs and add or replace with these, but it may take some considerable time. User talk:Tony Holkham The English equivalent is [2] . I fear that with your slow internet connection some of the browsing may be frustrating. I like the map search as it enables one to see what else is in the same parish. The additional data layers on the Wales site are useful, Cadw scheduled ancient monuments etc. Citing either site can be difficult, at least for me, one has to have the correct page rather than a search result. Please do not ask me to explain! [3] is the third.

I cannot agree about self-published sources, some are worse than others, and replacing BLB would not be a priority for my time. Self-published do not have error correction. Historicengland listings are solely that, and with the lack of funding have not had much updating in light of research in the last 50 years, so OK for most purposes though going back to their sources could be useful.
