I deleted the part about "most animated films were released by Walt Disney Studios." A great deal of animated films, especially in the 1970s, were issued by companies other than Disney, and besides, this is irrelevant to the fact that this was the first animated film released by Universal, so let's not bother mentioning it. I'm sure everyone knows that Disney was/is a big studio, and issued a lot of animated films, but they certainly didn't issue a majority of the animated films out there. Another thing: I didn't think Bebe's Kids was worth mentioning in this article. Any mention of it should go on the article for the actor, as it would be completely irrelevant to mention it here. Also, a citation is needed for the claim that "a large portion of the plot was lifted almost verbatim and used as the central conflict in the Disney/Pixar film A Bug's Life." I've never seen that film, so could somebody provide a link that clarifies this statement as being true? (Sugar Bear 22:12, 21 March 2006 (UTC))[reply]

New Plot Synopsis[edit]

I have a nice, streamlined synopsis of this movie ready to post here, as long as no one will be too hurt to see the old one go. If it works, I'd like to move on to fixing other movies that have been marked with "Overly long or detailed" tags on their synopses. I'm new here, but I hope I can help. David Kirschner[edit]

This film is on the list of films produced by David Kirschner on his page. Could someone who's able to edit locked pages put his name under producer on this page? Web wonder (talk) 20:46, 18 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

He was not a producer, he was just the screenwriter. See this. I've corrected Kirschner's article. You may want to review his other producer credits to see if they are valid. Erik (talk | contribs) 20:50, 18 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Correction: He was an executive producer, but that infobox field should not list them, just the main producers. Erik (talk | contribs) 20:55, 18 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Reply. Me Too. He's also the primary creator. Maybe I should edit mine off.

(Take Note All) I am (Not) editing the original. David did a lot for this film, so he should really be listed where credit is do.

Serbian bulgarian war??? Excuse me dear sir from wiki I once read it on this page that Fivel who had lived in Russia had to leave russia because of Serbian Bulgarian war.??? Do you have any knowledge of geography???I guess not because you than would know that Russia is far away from Serbia and Bulgaria, because those two countries are in Balkan and Russia is on East between Norther sea Black sea Turkey, and Bulgaria and Serbia wasn't even nera Russia even in XIX century and early XX CENTURY etc etc. Everybody of you from every wiki talk about facts, but you don't respect logical fact. I'm glad it has been deleted... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.101.163.97 (talk) 14:00, 31 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There are two links in the external links section...[edit]

about a character named "Nicolai Mousekewitz". They are both in Spanish and one of them is broken; it is a deleted wikibooks page that was identical to the other one. The other one claims he is Fievel's cousin, he has only a fleeting appearance in the movie, and he was supposed to sing Somewhere Out There but was written out.

What the hell, Wikipedia?

I'd edit them out myself but the article is locked. --174.109.193.80 (talk) 04:59, 8 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Edited to remove those links you mentioned. That "screenshot" of Nicolai is actually a shot of Mrs. Brisby from The Secret of NIMH, so this so-called "cousin" is probably made-up by a fan. --SilentAria talk 09:24, 8 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Theatrical "record"?[edit]

In the Theatrical section, it says:

"At the time of its release, An American Tail became the highest grossing non-Disney produced animated feature, drawing over $47 million USD. It was also one of the first animated films to outdraw a Disney film, beating out The Great Mouse Detective (also released in 1986 but four months earlier) by over $22 million USD. It would later be outgrossed by the next Bluth film, 1988's The Land Before Time, which marginally outperformed Oliver and Company. The record would quickly be shattered with the release of The Little Mermaid three years later."

Wait, what record? All the blurb says is that it outsold any NON-DISNEY movie. The Little Mermaid was a Disney movie, so what record is it that was supposedly shattered? Yes, the blurb does say that it, and The Land Before Time, outdrew Disney movies during those same times, but not that either of them set any records at all. This section needs clarification, or else to just have that last sentence removed. MXVN (talk) 03:18, 11 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Steven Spielberg[edit]

I haven't researched this film enough to know just how much Steven Spielberg contributed (other than his name as presenter) to this film. But his involvement should be addressed one way or another.

As the article stands, his last name is referenced twice without a link to his own page (as if the reader should know him only by his last name), before his first name is mentioned. One possible solution: simply adding "Steven Spielberg's" before the first mention of Amblin Entertainment in the article.

That's an easy fix. But, additionally, if Spielberg contributed creatively to the film, it might be worth mentioning how. And if he didn't, it might be worth talking about that. In the eyes of (at least some of) the public at the time, this was a Spielberg film. 08:30, 26 July 2013 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 199.83.220.60 (talk)

Reception[edit]

Despite generally positive reviews, as indicated by the RT score among other things, only negative reviews are quoted in the Reception section. It seems that someone who dislikes the film intends to portray it in a negative light and ignore popular opinion. Kind of a shame. Wikipedia shouldn't be about misrepresenting the facts in order to cater to one person's grudge. AceRoccola (talk) 04:47, 12 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Midquel?[edit]

Why does the article say that the two direct-to-video films were midquels? They were additional sequels. In the third film Fievel commented on them having a dream about them moving out west; essentially the whole second movie was Fievel's dream. Emperor001 (talk) 03:46, 24 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Not done: it's not clear what changes you want to be made. Please mention the specific changes in a "change X to Y" format. NQ (talk) 21:46, 1 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I think IP wants teh category "Media Franchises" added to the article (a couple of IPs did likewise to a handful of articles I watch yesterday). I pretty much never touch cats unless I see a blatantly wrong one added so I'm not positive, but that should work on this one. Millahnna (talk) 21:50, 1 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Edit request (Re: Sequels and spinoffs)[edit]

On, February 26, 2015, Coleman Clark Studios announced and live action filming the fifth film of An American Tail titled, An American Tail: Fievel's Adventure in Real Life and set it to be released on July 26, 2015.

As of March 2015, A sixth film was announced titled, An American Tail: Fievel's Unexcepted Journey. The film was set to be in Development and the two working titles is confirmed titled, An American Tail: Fievel's Unexcepted Journey and An American Tail: A Rat's Story.

  • Google search of "Coleman Clark Studios" yields no results [1].
  • Google search of "An American Tail: Fievel's Adventure in Real Life" yields no results [2]
  • Google search of "An American Tail: Fievel's Unexcepted (sic) Journey" yields no results [3], nor does "...Unexpected Journey" [4] and "...Unaccepted Journey" [5]
  • Google search of "An American Tail: A Rat's Story" once again yields no results. [6]

In short, they don't exist. I've removed the exact same two sentences that were posted in An American Tail: Fievel Goes West yesterday, but someone reverted it and then posted it here. I've fixed the other article, but since this one is protected can someone remove them. 74.242.170.202 (talk) 21:42, 30 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

1998 VHS Rerelease[edit]

Shouldn't it be noted that both An American Tail and its sequel An American Tail: Fievel Goes West were digitally restored and rereleased onto VHS in August of 1998? The 1998 rereleases of both films came in a limited edition boxed 2-pack set with both videos having clamshell VHS cases. I have two sources to prove this.

Differences in two Blu-ray versions[edit]

There are two Blu-ray versions of this film. There’s one that is ultraviolet. Is there a difference between a regular Blu-ray release and ultraviolet Blu-ray? Retrosunshine2006 talk 20:19, 12 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

box office information wrong[edit]

It now says in the infobox $104.5 million. In the article it says The film has grossed up to $47 million in the United States and Canada, also known as the domestic box office, and $84 million worldwide. Dream Focus 14:26, 26 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
