Perhaps unsurprisingly, pounds aren't solely a British phenomenon. Many towns in formerly-British New England still have surviving (though non-operational) town pounds where stray livestock were formerly impounded. I have no strong feelings as long as the two duplicating articles get merged (Pound (village) is not one of WP's finest, and totally unsourced). Pinfold probably needs merged too, or the distinction clarified. When the dust settles, make sure that Pound is updated (there was no link to Animal pound, but there is now). And probably every country where animals graze! I wonder if the modern version "Car pound" needs a mention somewhere, as it's quite analogous - somewhere that errant cars/cows are taken and can only be released for a fee. See this to verify usage. PamD 16:30, 13 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

A merge is probably overdue, but I strongly disagree that the parent article should be Animal pound. In my many years I have heard them referred to as 'the pound', 'the village pound' or 'the pinfold' ... but never once the animal pound. Looking at Media related to pounds and pinfolds at Wikimedia Commons, it seems to me that they are regional names for this type of enclosure (north of Birmingham predominately pinfold and south of Birmingham pound). If this was the only thing to consider then it would be a toss up between the names. However I am not sure when if ever English legislation used the term pinfold, for example in the Protection of Animals Act 1911 the term used is pound.

Both the source for this article supported by the flicker images mentioned on the talk page of Pound (village) indicate that pounds were also used in America. Here are two acts of state parliaments in Australia: Pounds Act 1890 in Victoria, and the Impounding Act 1993 in New South Wales, also The cattle-trespass act, 1871 of India and Fences and Impounding of Animals Act, (revised 1989) of Nova Scotia, Canada. All these acts describe the enclosures as "pounds" not "pinfolds".

Is there any evidence that pinfold was used anywhere outside of the North of England? If not then I think we should use the term "pound" for this combined article. As the name pound needs to be disambiguated, we can either use a natural disambiguation such as "animal pound" or we can go for bracket solution such as "pound (animal)", "pound (stock)" etc. I prefer the natural disambiguation solution. BTW The reason pounds fell into disuse in England was that an act was passed saying that any suitable enclosure could be used to impound a stray animal, so the need for dedicated pounds for stock ended and with them the cost to the parish of maintaining them (I saw a copy of the legislation on the net but did not recoded its name). -- PBS (talk) 09:50, 15 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Has anyone anything to add to this conversation or can I go ahead and mergethe other two articles into this one.? My intention is to delete this article, move the article with the oldest history -- Pinfold (history for Pinfold, history for Pound (village) ) -- to this page and then cut and past the other article--Pound (village)-- into it, and then add a new lead to the combined article. After that is done we can then discuss which is the most appropriate name to use if anyone thinks that Animal pound is not the best name. -- PBS (talk) 21:15, 20 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

In the end I did the merge in the same way as any other editor could do it (without using admin privileges to merge histories). adding to the history of all three articles the information that this has been done to meet copyright requrirements. As always this is a work in progress and much more needs to be done before this article is anyway near the quality of a good article. -- PBS (talk) 12:55, 19 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
