Additional flyover cities.[edit]

Happen to be on Apple maps the other night and I noticed that they have added additional coverage for New York City, the additional coverage includes Staten Island and queens. It also looks like they expanded coverage in Philadelphia but I'm not 100% for sure. Cleanup[edit]

I have reorganised the existing article into a more conventional structure with a new history section that incorporates an 'early bugs' section detailing of the initial problems. I have also expanded the lead, demoted the lists of places, and removed the banners relating to lead length and balance. PeterEastern (talk) 02:54, 18 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Street View is not Street View[edit]

Street View as known in Google Maps is a feature consisting of geographically positioned panoramas. The Apple Maps Vans are not capable of creating seamless panoramas as the cameras are on the corners of the vans. Panoramas require all component images to be taken from the same exact perspective (see the camera balls on Google Street View cars). The vans are only known to be part of a Ground Truth project — something for which job listings have appeared on Apple's website. I propose that the "Street View" section be renamed "Ground Truth" as to not be conflated with Google Street View. The vans are known to be performing some geospatial scanning. Almost monopoly in the expats community in China.[edit]

It would be worth noting that AutoNavi (Apple Maps) is intensely used by expats and travelers in China, since unlike its competitors, it is available in English and it's not restricted by the Great Firewall. I don't find sources for it, i'm the source, i live here. (I can't use Google, it is restricted). Modern Reception[edit]

The main, first part of this section of the article looks to be based around citations from chiefly U.S. sources, which suggest early basic functional problems are largely fixed. Are there any sources from elsewhere to support this? My personal experience as a UK user is that it's still riddled with inaccuracies - often quite wierd. The app offers a facility to 'Report an Issue' which I often tried using but gave up when I realised I was wasting my time because nobody was doing anything with my reports. 31.51.220.16 (talk) 02:52, 28 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Undue "Early inaccuracies" section[edit]

Though these issues did receive considerable coverage (and viral memes) early on, that has not been the case for almost a decade now; I suspect that its inclusion as a top-level main section is the result of WP:RECENTISM from 2013-2015 when this article was made. Its inclusion within a main section of the article body isn't justified; the section should be trimmed and refactored into the History section, as one or two paragraphs max. The tables (feature availability by country) should be split off to another article. This article is currently very hard to read due to excess scrolling, and impossible to read on mobile due to how long the tables are. Google Maps doesn't have any tables, for example. @DFlhb another article wouldn't be necessary in my opinion. I honestly would not mind if that first table gets removed from the page, as I think it is unnecessary and just filling up space. That's fair; it's of somewhat obscure utility, and I'd assume that it's likely not up to date, making it even less useful. I don't think we have a "Availability of Google Maps features by region" article for example. My issue is that I'd actually support deletion of all tables on this page and turning them into WP:SUMMARY; which might be too radical, hence why I proposed a split. @DFlhb It does seem a bit too much. There are other tables that can be included (and I think they should), although it would make the page even longer, which like you stated is an issue. Some of the features are listed at Apple Look Around, like AR Walking Directions and Refine Location (these are more connected to it), so this page could have been a bit longer. That said, if there are articles that are not explicitly about Apple Maps, maybe a section could be made to include those features. That way, there could be a way to say "see also: Article X" or something like that and it would shorten the page. This is just a thought. Losipov (talk) 20:16, 29 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
How about having a Features section here, that WP:SUMMARYzes (in concise paragraphs, not tables) the notable stuff (not listing all countries), having a "Main article:" link at the beginning of that section that points to Availability of Apple Maps features by country, and also having a link to Availability of Apple Maps features by country at the end of the artice in the "See also" section? I just would rather avoid tables in articles unless necessary, since they're horrible on mobile and also for accessibility reasons (can you having having to sit there 20 minutes while your screen reader reads every cell in that table?) @Dmartin969 I honestly think that the first table in the article (ie: the "availability by country" one) should have been removed because that information was already present throughout the rest of the article. The other tables should have been kept, as they are more accurate and precise than the Feature Availability Page (and now, to an extent, Justin O'Beirne's blog). These are just my thoughts. Accuracy isn't a great reason for inclusion, as WP:NOTGUIDE is policy, but I've added Apple's official list of feature availability by country (far more comprehensive than what we had, and covers all the removed tables, not just the first) to the External links section DFlhb (talk) 04:39, 4 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Removing the article tag[edit]

I'm pretty sure that the inaccuracies referred to in the tag were from the tables which were removed (which were sporadically updated). It seems more appropriate now to remove it as a result.
