Expansion[edit]

I'm going to add a more detailed section about the animal's diet under the ecology section for right now. The request on WP:Requests for expansion asked for more information on the Oryx's social behavior so I'll work on that as well, probably on a user subpage. I don't really know much about this animal, so any help in expanding this article would be appreciated.--Heno (talk) 19:52, 11 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have expanded the intro and added a "Distribution and habitat" section. This section really needs more on current distribution, and possibly a detailed range map. Donlammers (talk) 03:01, 15 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Images[edit]

Drawing of the head of the Arabian Oryx, by Rowland Ward.

I am removing the image of a drawing by Rowland Ward (Image:Oryx leucoryx00.jpg), taken from Records of Big Game. Although identified as Oryx leucorix, the horns are not right, the description sounds more like a Scimitar Horned Oryx, and the described range does not match the Arabian Oryx. Looking at both the Big Game book and the Finnish article (translation by Google), it sounds like there have been some changes in species identification of the Oryx over the years, and this picture might have been appropriate when it was drawn (there does not seem to be a "Scimitar horned Oryx" in the book). Until this is sorted out, I don't think this image is appropriate. Hopefull I can take a look at this in the not too distant future. Donlammers (talk) 03:01, 15 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Image is definitely Scimitar-horned Oryx and not Arabian Oryx. (Taivo (talk) 03:18, 15 November 2009 (UTC))[reply]
Mystery solved (I think) with clues from the Finnish Web site (which shows this picture as well, but has an "Etymology" section that references the Arabian Oryx Project. When the book from which this image was taken was published (1903), the Arabian Oryx was Oryx beatrix and the Scimitar-horned Oryx was Oryx leucoryx. Evidently both have been referred to as "White Oryx", so that adds to the confusion. The species renaming happened in 1903, so for when it was published the image is correct. I will be adding "Etymology" shortly based on the Finnish version (though I will go back to their original references because the Google translation is pretty bad).Donlammers (talk) 17:48, 15 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
