After whom was the road named?[edit]

Resolved

If one of the family fought or was a general of distinction in that war with Lord Elgin that might provide an explanation, as would an Arbuthnot in the Colonial service. Possible candidates are the Generals

Roads tend to be named after people. The only way Arbuthnot is a word at all is as a surname, ergo one can infer that the road is named after a member of the said family.--Couter-revolutionary 02:22, 7 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No, not 'Improbable to an enormous extent'. The article on the name clearly states the family is named after the 'village of Arbuthnott'. So equally probably the street could be named after a location known to someone in the administration at the time of naming, as happened in many other places. As I have said already linking the street to the family without any evidence is pure speculation and not fit for an encyclopedia. As such the link should be removed. Well, the Arbuthnott article states that it is only a small village. Even if the street really is named after that village, the village is probably only known because of the Arbuthnott family. I would think that chances are, the street is named after either the family or someone in the family. But to be very technical about issue, there should be some verification that the street was named for the family if we're categorising it as such. The street will not have been named after the village which was spelled with two ts. There was a hamlet called Arbuthnot but it was built and named after Arbuthnot Road. We are working on discovering which member of the family. I hope somebody may find the road from the category and help us with more detail. :) - Kittybrewster 05:20, 8 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Information here should be fact, not guesswork in the hope that a fact may appear to support it. The spelling of the name is irrelevant, it would hardly be the first place/street mispelt because a clerk did know the correct spelling (cf Lempster, NH named for the family of Sir William Fermor, Lord Leominster or Pomfret, Connecticut and Pomfret, Vermont named after Pontefract) . There was no place called Arbuthnot after which the road could have been named. All members of the Arbuthnot family are embraced by the category Arbuthnot family so the fact that we are uncertain precisely which seems irrelevant. - Kittybrewster 22:11, 8 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Misspellings are not uncommon, the family article claims that the name comes from the village of Arbuthnott, so there clearly is a somewhere rather than a someone the road can be named after. What a stupid argument. Of course the road in Hong Kong is not named after a village, nor would it be named after some poor relation digging peat in Orkney. It is quite obviously, following the British tradition in just about every city they ever built, named after a famous personage of that family/surname. Argument for argument's sake. Main thoroughfare?[edit]

[2] I work less than a kilometre downhill from this street and I don't think I've ever even set foot on it. The main roads in Central are Queen's, Des Voeux, Connaught, and maybe Hollywood.
