Large Quotes[edit]

Stick to the subject[edit]

If this article is about the archaeology of shipwrecks, then it should focus on wrecks that have been archaeologically investigated. The section "Examples of famous shipwrecks" should not have a home here. What, exactly, is the archaeological importance of the Titanic when compared with other wrecks? However important it might be to mention sites where recreational divers can visit, this also is of minor importance to the article. Nor does the existence of a television program about a wreck necessarily make it worthy of mention in the article. What is needed is some focus on archaeologically important shipwrecks, with an explanation of what is important about each of them.

A non-exhaustive list of wrecks of particular importance would probably be made up of the following:

European and Mediterranean origins[edit]

Bronze age[edit]

Classical period/Iron age[edit]

Medieval[edit]

Sutton Hoo ship (OK, not a wreck, but it is archeologically important)
Yassi Ada 7th century shipwreck
Skuldelev ships (a.k.a. Roskilde)
Bremen cog
Newport medieval ship

Early modern[edit]

This list is clearly incomplete, but I think it makes the point. Wrecks of vessels built outside the European and Mediterranean area need to be added, as well as from more recent periods. Titanic, for the avoidance of doubt, adds little to archaeological knowledge when compared with those listed above. The article therefore needs some fairly radical surgery.
