Closure date[edit]

I've changed the closing date for Winton Pier station. If you look at Scotrail, it was still operational as a station right up until electrification. In fact, it was a good link for both the Arran ferry and the Isle of Man ferries which operated right at the pierhead. While, for many years the station was little more than two platforms it was still used. Douglasnicol 16:53, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Seems to be a mistake in the Railway Directory book, I should have realised since trains kept running to the harbour after the 1960s! The date the directory gives (6 May 1968) is the same day Montgomerie Pier officially closed, so do you think perhaps that was when the station was renamed 'Ardrossan Harbour'? Or did the station stay 'Winton Pier' right up till the 80s?Dreamer84 17:34, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Railscot seems to support the idea that the station was still called Montgomerie Pier until the electrification. I never understood why they closed it and built the Ardrossan Harbour platform. The only possible explanation I can think of is that it eliminated the need for one level crossing, and maybe the overhead electric equipment might be too close to the sea.
