Orphaned references in Arizona Wildcats football[edit]

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Arizona Wildcats football's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Reference named "record":

  • From Utah Utes football: "2009 Utah Football Media Guide" (PDF). University of Utah. p. 157. Retrieved 2010-07-08.
  • From William W. Skinner: C. G. Church (ed.), Alumni Record of the Maryland Agricultural College, p. 44–47, 1914.

I apologize if any of the above are effectively identical; I am just a simple computer program, so I can't determine whether minor differences are significant or not. AnomieBOT 23:42, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

early nickname - "Varsity"[edit]

Wikipedia talk:WikiProject College football has worked on completing season articles (Category:Arizona Wildcats football seasons) for Arizona, 1899-present. We have incomplete information on nicknames, so this note is for context. "Wildcats" was adopted in 1914 and used onward.

We have a lone source of the 1996 student newspaper which states repeated that the original nickname was "Varsity." There is ongoing debate of whether this is transcription and/or misunderstanding of the term "varsity" simply referring to the senior team (vs JV, freshman, etc) -quite possible. Additional searches have not revealed similar support for "Varsity," nor have they shown any nickname prior to 1914 and "Wildcats." "Varsity" has been in use in this article since 2010 and is similarly incorporated and cited in other Arizona football locations such as season articles.

This use of "Varsity" may be incorrect. Based on long-standing precedence and Wikipedia:Verifiability, not truth I have left "Varisty" intact. You're welcome to research and improve. UW Dawgs (talk) 20:54, 8 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The naming with "Varsity" as a proper noun is in error. See discussion at Talk:1899 Arizona Varisty football team#Article title and Wikipedia talk:WikiProject College football#Assist with early Arizona Wildcats football team articles. Cbl62 (talk) 00:48, 9 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
On reflection, the least controversial naming protocol here would be "1899 Arizona football team". That is how it has been handled in other programs in the pre-nickname era. See, e.g., 1908 Florida football team, 1893 LSU football team, 1900 Washington Agricultural football team, 1900 Washington football team. Cbl62 (talk) 00:50, 9 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Cbl62: If you believe you are acting under new consensus, which I explicitly dispute has been reached, please also enact your desired change globally and expunge the historical consensus so we are at least consistent across Arizona FB category.

Right now, you have introduced contradictory content into two specific articles without consensus and not propagated that content consistently throughout the rest of the category. This rogue implementation is exactly what I hoped to avoid when initiating both ongoing Talk discussions. My move today of the new 1899 and 1900 (h/t re typo) articles brought them into alignment with our existing language in use throughout the category. UW Dawgs (talk) 02:08, 9 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I have not changed content in the season articles. Prior to September 2016, there were no season articles with the erroneous "Varsity" designation. That misinformation was introduced only recently to the season articles. If your concern is with changing the remaining pre-nickname articles to strike "Varsity", I am in agreement that this should be done. I did not complete that earlier today as I became distracted with election coverage which has been pretty captivating. It looks like you and Jweiss have now made the needed changes. If there is anything else that you believe needs to be done, let me know and I can take care of it. (I have to drive to LA tomorrow, but can do that work when I get back home late tomorrow.)
