I was lucky to have lived in east arlington for 10 years from 1968 thru 1978.I was teaching jr high school science in manchester and we bought our first house on mill road in east arlington next door to the fire station . The house was built in 1920 by the Coulter family who owned a saw mill on the kelly stand road and had many owners before we moved in in september of 1968. Being the son of a firefighter from massachusetts i became a member of the arlington volunteer fire department and eventually was assitant chief before we moved to Bennington in 1978 .I left teaching to work for the vt department of environmental conservation in 1972 and retired in 1997 . During the 1960s east arlington was a bustling village with Hale furniture company busy and the 'candle mill village complex drawing many visitors. I used to work part time at the local IGA grocery store my youngest son now 36 came home from the hospital to our house in Arlington and grew up in the tiny village. Arlington was the home of author Dorothy Canfield Fisher and was the home of Norman Rockwell who had his studio in west Arlington. Rockwell used many local folks as subjects for his post covers in the 40s and 50s. The Battenkill river Vermonts famous trout stream ,runs thru the heart of town and attracts fishermen and canoeists from all over the world. During its early years Arlington was home to several of the Green Mountain Boys notably Orange Baker and his brother Remember Baker. We enjoy living in central vermont but will always miss the good times we spent in Arlington . Bill Barry from Barre vt
