Former students of Arthur Berry[edit]

If it were at all possible for inclusion, I would like to recommend a section on Arthur's words of tuition to his students, for there must be a lot of us out there to add a fascinating insight into Arthur's visionary perception of the world.

From John McMinn (graduated North Staffs Polytechnic 1986) - Arthur taught me at North Staffs Polytechnic in the mid 1980's. I recall his advice about portraits "Never draw or paint someone bigger than they are in real life, because if you do then the image becomes abstracted, and the subject within becomes akin to a monster of sorts". Arthur Berry November 1984. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.198.15.210 (talk) 00:23, 13 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Butchery[edit]

Someone has set about absolutely butchering this article but it is unclear what possible purpose this orgy of mass deletion actually serves. Peter morrell 10:55, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Seeing as you have not replied to my message I have reverted all your deletions so maybe we can begin to discuss the article BEFORE you go around deleting whole swathes of stuff from articles at random without even consulting regular editors first. Peter morrell 12:10, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
"More latterly he lived on Porthill Bank near Wolstanton and his second wife, Cynthia, in Longport as I believe she was allergic to his dog, a village on the western border of Stoke-on-Trent." You wrote that. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 12:48, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Is this meant to comprise an answer to my question? LOL I hope you can do a little better than that. Perhaps you can find the diff that supports your claim that I wrote it? Is the quote referenced? Peter morrell 14:53, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
If you didn't write it, why did you restore that semi-literate garbage to the article? Try a bit of critical reading. LOL. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 17:11, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I reverted your swathe of deletions, that was all. If you wish to proceed editing this article then I suggest you adopt a more collaborative style or further deletions of the sort you practice may also get reverted. Maybe you can pinpoint the specific issues in the text which are not happy about, post them here on Talk and folks can agree or disagree. This is called collaboration, which is how editing articles is supposed to proceed whenever there is some disagreement about content or style. I see no objection to that procedure and I would be more than happy to collaborate in that way. Admittedly it takes longer but at least you then have happy editors who can agree rather than edit wars, which nobody wants. Peter morrell 17:20, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Icon of Stoke-on-Trent life: too long, too many quotes, some weird numbering system to do with his poems. People & Places of Berry's World: is that some kind of theme park? John McMinn- who's he? Legacy: "It is regrettable that"- is it? And so on. And is a "pub aficianado" another term for a drunk? He's introduced in one place as a "pig breeder", but that's left up in the air. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 17:35, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
LOL I tend to agree - it certainly is a mish mash of all sorts of stuff. Not sure about the pig breeding thing, maybe you can give here a trimmed back version of the two sections that you dislike and we can agree on a fresh copy that is more succinct? Is that doable? What makes his writing so interesting is that he writes about pub life in the 50s and 60s and he really brings that to life and it is an age that has almost completely disappeared in the UK. I guess it's impossible to compress all that into the article here which I agree would be better if some of the fat were trimmed from it. Have a go and let's see what you come up with. Peter morrell 17:43, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Ok- might be some time later- I have a hard time disentangling the prose. I only came here because he was listed as an "English artist". Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 17:53, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
He was an artist as well and painted in a dark impressionistic style you can find many on google. Originally the article was titled Arthur Berry artist but somebody changed it a while back to playwright because he was more famous for his plays. In the 1980s, he also taught painting at Staffordshire University, what was then N Staffs Poly. Hanley museum in Stoke have a large collection of his artworks. Peter morrell 17:59, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I see the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery in Stoke-on-Trent have an exhibition of Berry and Lowry at the moment. I can now spot a Berry at 20 yards (the strokes go from lower right to upper left)- I don't know whether that indicates he was left- or right-handed. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 18:19, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. One of his arms was non-functional, I can't remember why. I think he was left handed, therefore. Peter morrell 18:22, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I imported a section into my sandbox, and found that he was described as having a "good left arm" and a useless right. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 22:25, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
About half of the section titled "Stoke-on-Trent life" contains quotations from Berry's writings (a primary source) with commentary from the editor who inserted it (OR and synthesis). I don't think it's possible to disentangle the two strands. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 08:36, 3 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Section "Berry's paintings - the Lowry of the Potteries?" contains two long quotations from letters posted in the Stoke Sentinel, without attribution- and the links now just point to the current front page of the paper. There's no hits for the text either, so the section now consists of anonymous opinions on him. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 20:45, 3 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Been too busy to check things and I see someone else has taken up your work so I have kinda lost interest in the whole thing now, I agree with your comment somewhere that the Daily Mail is "a reactionary rag" LOL but it is the Express that is owned by Desmond, not the Mail, cheers :) Peter morrell 18:16, 4 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
