GOCE copyedit

Hi, @West Virginian:, I've gone through the article once and will be doing 1 or 2 more scans before I consider this complete. A few comments:

  • "he would have to have pull": It took me a second read to parse what "pull" meant. Is it possible to rephrase it with an editorial change to another word like "influence"?
  • Tenryuu, thank you so much for your thoughtful and thorough copyedit of this article! Per this suggestion, I've rewritten the sentence as thus, "Spaid declared at the conference that he would require greater influence if he were to be reappointed as superintendent." Please let me know if this adequately addresses your recommendation! -- West Virginian (talk) 14:11, 29 February 2020 (UTC)
Agree , works for me.
  • In July 1914, Spaid was elected Supervisor of Washington County, Maryland schools, and was to assume his duties in August 1914.: The sentence as phrased implies that he didn't take on the role in August, but at some other date. I think it's safe to assume that even though the source says that he was to assume his duties in August, we can probably change it to be more definite.
  • Tenryuu, thank you for this catch. I could not find any sources to confirm whether he took that post, but other sources cited in this article note that he remained the superintendent of schools in Dorchester County. I do not have a source that states explicitly that he turned down the post, so I did not state this in the article. Do you have any recommendations for how to handle this? I would be fine with removing his Washington County appointment altogether. What are your thoughts on this? -- West Virginian (talk) 14:11, 29 February 2020 (UTC)
Later, I'll give it a bit more thought.
Resolved, changed the sentence a little. If someone feels that's assuming too much off of the source they're welcome to revert it.
  • Prior to Spaid's appointment as Delaware State Commissioner of Education, the Delaware General Assembly passed an act to alter school districts in 1915.: Is there any more information about what this alteration entailed?
  • Tenryuu, thank you for this comment. I've modified this statement to read as such, "In May 1918, Spaid held meetings of the Delaware State Board of Education at Stanton and locations across Delaware to hear from residents in school districts affected by the Delaware General Assembly's 1915 alteration of school district boundaries, to include consolidation of districts." Please let me know if this addresses your comment. The article did not go into more detail than this unfortunately. Thanks again!-- West Virginian (talk) 14:29, 29 February 2020 (UTC)
Agree , it's nice to have a bit more information.

Looking to hear from you soon! --Tenryuu (🐲💬🌟) 02:22, 22 February 2020 (UTC)

Tenryuu, thank you again for your thorough and thoughtful review and copyedit! I've addressed all your comments, suggestions, and guidance above. Please let me know if you have any further suggestions or questions in the meantime! -- West Virginian (talk) 14:29, 29 February 2020 (UTC)

Was there also a reason why only the county was linked and not the state? --Tenryuu (🐲💬🌟) 02:23, 22 February 2020 (UTC)

  • Tenryuu, I tend to only link counties and lesser-known place names in U.S. articles, and not states, per previous guidance from reviewers. I'm not sure what the current Wikipedia standard is for this. Please provide me with any additional guidance on this. -- West Virginian (talk) 14:33, 29 February 2020 (UTC)
Later; I'm waiting for a reply from the folks over at the Teahouse to reply to my question. Will update soon.
Resolved: From my question I got this reply:

I tend to side with your approach. It's a yankee-centric perspective that assumes everyone on this planet knows the names of every state in the US. Living in the UK, I just about do. I'm sure we've all heard of America, so don't need it wikilinked. But US states seem worthy of linking for their first mention. I'm not sure if there's any specific policy on this, apart from the Principle of least astonishment, meaning that if it isn't wikilinked, you could ask why isn't it wikilinked?

I'll leave the links as I've edited them.

@West Virginian: Good to hear from you again. Will come back to this later. --Tenryuu (🐲💬🌟) 23:37, 29 February 2020 (UTC)
