As a matter of policy, citations only need to appear for material that is challenged or likely to be challenged. Wikipedia standards for verifiability and neutrality are especially exacting for information on living persons, which is something to be thankful for. The template currently at the top of the page warning of uncited material is probably not necessary, but take heart that it is intended to prevent libelous content, not to call into question legitimate details of a person's life. I've added more references to the article. Something I should have done sooner. I also removed the template from the top of the page, but placed a small 'citation needed' note in the first paragraph under the "Research" heading. Original Research?[edit]

In this sentence: "A major source was the papers of John Van Antwerp MacMurray, who served as U.S. minister to China in the 1920s until his 1929 resignation against the wishes of President Franklin Roosevelt, who failed to persuade him to resume the post.^[1]"

Herbert Hoover was the President of the United States as of John Van Antwerp MacMurray's resignation date in November 1929. Franklin D. Roosevelt was the Governor of New York State. MacMurray did work for the Roosevelt Administration, from 1933 to 1944, but as Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania and. later, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary in Turkey. There was no indication in the supplied reference that then-Governor Roosevelt expressed any opinion about MacMurray's resignation, and the Wikipedia entry for the Governorship of Franklin D. Roosevelt has no indication that Roosevelt was interested in foreign policy as of 1929.

In addition, the supplied reference only says that MacMurray resigned because "differences of opinion between MacMurray and his superiors"; it does not record any objections from anyone. So it looks like "against the wishes of President Franklin Roosevelt", in addition to being false to fact (see above), is attempted original research because the supplied reference doesn't back it up. Nor does Wikipedia's own material on Franklin Roosevelt.

Did the author of this article lump together MacMurray's 1929 resignation and his 1935 Memorandum? The Memorandum was shelved by the Roosevelt Administration, and MacMurray's writing of it prompted neither resignation nor re-assignment. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.159.11.212 (talk) 15:25, 3 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
