Methodist seminary

Removed category: Methodist Seminaries ATS is not and never has been officially aligned with The United Methodist Church or its predecessor denominations. It is an independent institution in the Wesleyan tradition. JoelleSatz 16:46, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

Please consider removing the category Methodist Seminaries from Asbury Theological Seminary. Category was removed once before. See note in discussion:

Removed category: Methodist Seminaries
ATS is not and never has been officially aligned with The United Methodist Church or its predecessor denominations. It is an independent institution in the Wesleyan tradition.

While many of the faculty and students are Methodists, and while ATS exerts much political influence in The United Methodist Church, it is not part of that denomination. Saying that ATS is a Methodist seminary is like saying that the USA is a Christian nation, rather than a nation largely composed of Christians.

There are only 13 official seminaries of TUMC and this category should be reserved for them. -- JoelleSatz 18:01, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

Hi Joelle, I think that was my mistake[1], in trying to clear out Category:Methodism, where there were too many articles in the base category. Do you think that it is best to remove the methodist tag entirely? If so, please do it and I won't object, because you obviously know about ut than I do. -- BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 18:15, 7 January 2007 (UTC)
  • No, it never has been an official U.M. school. But it definitely IS "Methodist" from a theological standpoint. I am certain the current administration would agree. This is certainly true historically, too. Pastorwayne 00:24, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

Category definition is:

Colleges for Christian theology and pastoral education, affiliated with a Methodist or Wesleyan denomination, now or in the past.

ATS is not affiliated with any denomination, United Methodist or other. I am certain that the school would agree with that fact. Hence ATS does not fit within the definition.

Yes, Asbury can be described as Methodist, Wesleyan, and Arminian. However I would not deign to label ATS as a Wesleyan seminary. The Wesleyan Church might well agree.

I'm sorry to see such a willful change to reintroduce an error but don't intend to play ping-pong editing. Have it your way for now; I'll let the wikicommunity deal with the matter.

Unreferenced claims can be removed, so I've removed the cat and asked PW for a reference. roundhouse 20:16, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

I have reentered the category of Methodist seminary. It is definitely methodist. Teaching is very centered around Wesley. Please go to http://www.ats.wilmore.ky.us/about/distinctives.php and look at the "Rich Wesleyan Tradition". It shows, according to the own seminary's own admission. Also, definition of category has been adapted as well to better define methodism.Livin4dios 20:22, 16 January 2007 (UTC)

Asbury is not a Methodist seminary. It may fall within a Wesleyan tradition, broadly speaking, but its specific doctrines are not in agreement with those of The United Methodist Church, the British Methodist Church, or any other major Methodist body. It is loosely based on a Wesleyan understanding of Christianity, but it is most definitely not Methodist in any sense of the word. User:dmwarren 02:32, 28 January 2014 (EST)

POV

The description offered in this section makes it seem that ATS is within the continuous development of Wesleyan spirituality and Methodism. ATS is not affiliated with The United Methodist Church or The Wesleyan Church. This section needs to be reworded to make clear that ATS is not and has never been a part of The United Methodist Church or any of its predecessor denominations, nor is it part of The Wesleyan Church or any of its predecessor denominations. Asbury is, and remains, non-denominational and is not affiliated with any particular Christian denomination. It should therefore not use terminology related to specific denominations when describing itself. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dmwarren10 (talkcontribs) 08:18, 15 April 2014 (UTC)

Who's president?

After speaking personally to the President of the seminary, Dr. Kalas, and after consulting the seminary's website (which states that the current president is Dr. Kalas) I am informing everyone that until the inauguration of the new president-elect Timothy Tennent it is important for Dr. Kalas to remain as the recognized president of the seminary. This is the truth, not conjecture. Livin4dios (talk) 15:32, 19 February 2009 (UTC)
